History.
Born in Rome in late October 1909, Luigi Arbir Pascucci graduated from the University of Rome with a degree in economics and business. In 1934 he enlisted as a volunteer officer trainee and the following year was appointed second lieutenant with the 51st Infantry Regiment. In 1936 Pascucci was transferred to the Tank Regiment, and shortly afterwards with the 3rd Assault Tank Battalion he was sent to Italian East Africa on colonial police duties with the Special Lakes Division.
In mid-1937 Pascucci was sent on leave but was recalled to arms in December 1941 under the rank of lieutenant to be then assigned to the 132nd Tank Infantry Regiment at the Armored Division “Aries” in command of the 10th Company XIII Medium Tank Battalion. During the fighting of the Second Battle of El Alamein, he managed with his fellow tanker to hold his own against the preponderant British forces and conscious of his task to stem the enemy’s advance he decided to charge the enemy armor with the few remaining vehicles of his battalion causing their short retreat with high losses. Luigi perished in the fighting that followed on November 5, 1942, and for his bravery he was awarded the gold medal for military valor and was also promoted posthumously to the rank of captain.
