History.
Paolo Camillo Margherita Giuseppe Maria Thaon di Revel was born in Turin on June 10, 1859, to a noble Piedmontese family. After attending the Paternò Institute and the Salesian boarding school of Val Salice in Turin, he was sent to Genoa to a preparatory institute for the entrance examinations to the Naval School. In 1873, at age 14, he entered the Regia Marina and spent two years in Naples and three in Genoa. In 1879 he participated in the circumnavigation of the globe aboard the frigate Garibaldi, and in 1896 he was appointed lieutenant commander when he served four years as an aide to His Majesty King Umberto I himself. He was immediately considered a brilliant maneuverer and strict educator by his superiors, and was assigned command of the prestigious naval training institutes. In 1908 he participated with his fleet in the first relief effort at the city of Messina (which had just been hit by a terrible earthquake), and two years later he was promoted to rear admiral.
As rear admiral he participated in the 1911 Italian-Turkish War at the II Division of the II Naval Squadron and took part in several offensive actions against the Turks that earned him the commendation of the Military Order of Savoy. Shortly thereafter he was appointed chief of naval staff, pushing for the creation of light naval ships and naval aviation.
With the outbreak of the Great War Thaon found himself at odds with Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Luigi di Savoia Duke of the Abruzzi because of opinions on how to conduct naval warfare against the Austrians, but despite this he managed to conduct various actions and raids following his tactics that brought success and enabled the Royal Navy to inflict heavy losses on the enemy, as well as Thaon organized to safeguard the Venetian artistic works, which were at risk after the Battle of Caporetto. On November 6, 1918, he was promoted to admiral, and on the 12th he announced the Naval Victory Bulletin.
After his political ascent and Mussolini’s rise to power, he retired from political-military life, and after World War II he retired permanently from the global scene, dying in 1948 in Rome.
