Today, I am presenting a new French interwar reconnaissance aircraft: the Potez 637 A3.
In 1938, the French Air Force sought a modern tactical reconnaissance aircraft capable of replacing older observation platforms while taking advantage of an airframe already in production. To reduce development time and manufacturing costs, Potez chose to base the new aircraft on its successful Potez 63 family, itself developed in response to the Air Force’s 1934 multi-role fighter requirement. This versatile platform had already given rise to several well-known variants, including the Potez 630 and Potez 631 heavy fighters, making it an ideal foundation for a dedicated reconnaissance aircraft.
Designated the Potez 637 A3, the new aircraft introduced several important modifications to suit its reconnaissance role. The crew was increased from two to three, with the addition of an observer housed in a distinctive glazed gondola beneath the fuselage. This position provided good visibility below and around the aircraft, allowing the observer to carry out battlefield reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and photographic missions far more effectively than from a conventional cockpit. The new gondola, however, occupied the space previously used for the aircraft’s 20 mm Hispano cannons. As a result, the forward armament was reduced to a single fixed 7.5 mm MAC machine gun, greatly reducing the aircraft’s offensive capabilities. To compensate, a flexible machine gun was installed in the observation gondola, giving the aircraft limited defensive coverage against attacks from below.
The French Air Force placed an initial order for sixty aircraft, with approximately fifty delivered before the outbreak of the Second World War. The Potez 637 equipped the reconnaissance groups GR I/33, GR II/33, GR I/52, and GR II/52, where it was generally well received by its crews. Pilots appreciated its pleasant handling characteristics, while its speed and performance compared favorably with many contemporary reconnaissance aircraft. Nevertheless, the aircraft suffered from a significant weakness: the observer’s glazed gondola was poorly insulated, making high-altitude operations particularly uncomfortable and limiting the aircraft’s effectiveness during long reconnaissance missions.
Although the Potez 637 entered service only shortly before the war, its operational career proved remarkably brief. Even before the Battle of France, the French Air Force had begun replacing it with the Potez 63.11, another member of the Potez 63 family that offered superior visibility and was specifically optimized for tactical reconnaissance. As a result, relatively few Potez 637s took part in combat operations during the 1940 campaign. Following the Armistice, the surviving aircraft continued to serve for a short period with the Vichy Air Force before gradually being withdrawn from service and scrapped.

The aircraft is powered by two 570 hp Gnôme & Rhône 14M-4/5 engines, allowing it to reach a top speed of 435 km/h at an altitude of 3,800 m and a service ceiling of 8,500 m. However, its range is improved compared to the previous version thanks to additional fuel tanks, giving it a range of 1,500 km.
The crew consists of three people: a pilot, a rear gunner, and an observer who also operates the ventral machine gun.
Weapons
The aircraft’s armament is weak, to say the least; the removal of the two 20mm cannons significantly reduces its firepower. Nevertheless, it still features some interesting equipment:

Offensive armament:
- 1 x 7.5mm MAC 34 machine gun
- 8 x 10kg bombs (under-wing)
In-game, this aircraft would be an interesting addition, providing a well-powered but lightly armed low-BR attack aircraft to round out the French tech tree.
