The Harriers (all of them) are getting some pretty big buffs this next update. This includes a good deal more thrust at higher speeds.
The Harriers have always suffered from a really high flare to thrust ratio meaning trying to flare off an IR missile has been significantly more difficult compared to other fighters.
Now with the Harriers getting even more thrust throughout the speed envelope flaring even the earliest IR missiles has become near impossible.
This is some footage taken of gameplay on the dev server.
Pre-flaring, flaring, than a hard evasive turn is not even enough to defeat the AIM9P (Flz Lwf 63/80).
To evade the AIM9L in basically any other aircraft all is needed it to pop a flare and pull an evasive turn.
In a Harrier you need to spam about 50% of your flares power down to 0 and pull and after all that there is still a chance you will get hit.
Gaijin is aware that this is an issue, but have said that it is a limitation of the current system where greater thrust = greater IR signiture or something to that effect. It will probably be fixed in time as the systems are delevoped.
I don’t have the patience to sift through the Rumors thread to find it to verify but I believe I saw mention of a potential fix relatively soon. I hope that’s true because I love the Harriers, and the Matador is just about the best grinder for Japan
Actually, the whole IR signature story should be revisited I think, seeing that some like the Harriers are unrealistically hot, others like F-5C (IIRC) are unrealistically cold…
