I chose the f4E because it has 30 more countermeasures than any other US f4 in the game, and gets an internal gun unlike any other f-4 for the US

I’ve yet to make my way to the US Phantoms, but from flying the EJ and EJ Kai in Sim, the F-4J is probably my favorite. The short nose without the gun looks so much better than the E’s, and you get 6x AIM-7Fs.

I enjoy the Phantom FG1 over the FGR2 purely because it has the carrier take-off. So would probably pick the F4J because thats the carrier capable one right?

they are all carrier-capable (at least in the US techtree)

F-4C and F-4E are classed as “jet Fighters” which means that I dont think they can select the carrier as a take-off point in Sim. the F-4J is classed as a “Jet Fighter / Naval aircraft” and so would be able to.

At least this is the case with the FGR2 vs FG1 despite both having tail hooks

A lot of non naval aircraft get hooks at that point in the TT

Tail hooks were a thing for ground-based aircraft as well, I believe this was first tried in the T-38/F-5 in order to reduce the distance needed on landing.

yea the hooks were mainly used on runways in case of emergency and/or to shorten landing distance, same reason why the f-111, f-15, and f-16 have tail hooks

Yep, I know the FGR2 strictly speaking wasnt carrier capable as it didnt have the landing gear for it. But for the purposes of War Thunder you could land on a carrier using it.

its hard to but yes you can (the f-4’s are hard to land on carriers because they easily snap their gear)

Yeah… and the arrestor wire is glitchy and the carrier likes to take evasive actions and the lack of landing guidance…

I gave up trying in the FG1 :D

Pretty much only the Bucs and the Harriers i bother with carrier landings in (and maybe occasionally the sea-vixen)

actually, I think the wires are coded to be straight instead of how they visually work on some of the carrier models, but other times it does this:

btw yes I did this

Yeah, Carriers need some TLC
