PLZ05 BEA1 SAPCBC – why does it not trigger overpressure?

I noticed something strange with the PLZ05’s BEA1 SAPCBC round.

After the recent buff, its explosive filler was changed to JHL-3, giving it roughly 8.9 kg TNT equivalent and around 59 mm of HE penetration . However, the round seems to not trigger overpressure in situations where other explosive/HE-type shells with significantly less TNT equivalent do .

This suggests that overpressure is not simply determined by explosive mass or HE penetration. There seems to be another shell-specific damage/overpressure parameter involved.

That’s especially strange because the BEA1 has:

  • ~166 mm kinetic penetration
  • ~59 mm HE penetration
  • ~8.9 kg TNT equivalent

Yet a shell with much less explosive filler can trigger overpressure against the same target, while the BEA1 cannot.

Is this intended because of the SAPCBC damage model, or is the BEA1 missing an overpressure-related parameter in its damage model?

here the proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLCV9sNebQE

Your shell is detonating inside of armor it’s deeply penetrated into, as opposed to those shells without SAP capabilities detonating on the exterior of your point of contact. These shells that don’t penetrate are over-pressuring vehicles through their roof armor under the point of contact, not the armor you’re penetrating.

right, but SAP does not do that when it cant pen. There are like 2 options: 1. It does pen and it goes big boom inside and 2. it does not pen and goes boom like an HE shell at point contact.

In WT the SAPCBC makes 2 options: Can it pen and can it not pen - is it APHE or HE, it does that befor it hits the tank.

In the real world yes, then it would pen and go BOOM inside the hole it made

and bro, come on even if its true or not, did you see the video? The SAP with 8 KG of TNT cant overpressure are 20mm thin layer??? even if its clearly says 59mm of pen. Like there is something wrong.
