Please do something about Top Tier maps

Gaijin please do something about the small, brawling maps in Top Tier. I’m so sick of getting back to back maps with grid squares smaller than 300m and zero flanking options.
It just creates a Meta where the well armored tanks that can take a hit from the front are the only viable option.
What’s a Type-90 supposed to do against a Leopard 2A7 or M1A2 if the Type-90 can’t flank?
What’s a Challenger supposed to do against a Leopard 2A7 or M1A2 if the Challenger can’t take a hull down position because it’s a small town brawling map?

I’m sure there’s plenty of other examples but I mention those two as they’re both tanks I really enjoy playing but are an absolute NIGHTMARE on what seems to be the majority of maps in rotation. The Challengers in particular are almost unplayable in the current meta.

I remember the golden days where if you could drive to it, you could go there. Now half the maps are full of bullshit “dead zones” that’re apparently out of bounds. That is NOT good map design and it’s NOT fun to think you’re gonna be able to get into a good position just to be told no, and now you’re in a shit position while you turn around after wasting your precious first few seconds before the enemy team has sights on you.

The way the Tanks are modelled is fine, BR balancing is fine, everything else is fine, just please for the love of god stop with the small maps. If I wanted to play a deathmatch style game, I’d play Call of Duty. I have 5000 hours in this game, mainly because it’s always been a bit more tactical than games like COD, but it’s becoming unplayable for me, and it seems everywhere I look I’m met with people that share this same opinion.

It is a good design decision because it allows Gaijin to make non-hard map borders. However, that does not mean they are always in good locations. Ideally, they should always follow the terrain in some way, as well as being put in a location that doesn’t force a head on fight.

Small maps aren’t inherently bad, it’s bad maps that are bad. We don’t need less small maps, we need better designed (and more rural) maps.

That’s the thing, they’re always in spots that force head on fights. Examples I’m thinking of are;
Mozdok, the whole Top Right corner is banned.
Cargo Port, in the Battle game mode the whole airport on the other side of the highway is banned, and in all modes you’ll get the return to battlefield warning if you go too close to the water on the dock.
Sun City, the right boarder needs to be moved out a few meters to allow battles on that building, as it is now all you need to do is track someone while they try get around and they’re dead.
Normandy, Conquest game mode, the whole south section of the map is off limits forcing you on the beach or town.
Advance to the Rhine, you can’t even use half the buildings as cover without getting the count down warning.

Don’t get me wrong I understand what you’re saying, Maps like Abandoned Factory would be terrible if players were allowed to do a full north flank, but that’s also a map that has plenty of other options an plenty of cover to play around.
There’s maps I think do it well like Space Port, Cargo Port when it’s the full map, Artic and Sinai just to name a few.

I’m not 100% against smaller maps, I understand and agree that they have their place, but some of them are just so trash in top tier and it completely throw out the balance of some tanks like I mentioned in my original post.

The corner needed to be fixed due to how easy it was to spawncamp from there, but they went the lazy route instead of coming up with some other fix.

I think they actually reversed that, either on the dev server, or in another minor update. It shouldn’t have been blocked off in the first place, too.

Alaska in some configurations has the same issue too, and that ties into my point about map borders not following the terrain of the map. It is infuriating when you are stuck in a location and need to backtrack due to map borders.

Yeah and I guess that’s my overall point, I wish they’d actually FIX maps instead of just making areas out of bounds.

Must be on the Dev server 'cause I played it yesterday and it was still there. If they have fixed it that’s a step in the right direction at least.

Yeah I 100% agree with you, I’m not 100% against anything Gaijin is doing, I get the idea behind it. I just wish they’d put 2 seconds of thought into it instead of just drawing a line and calling it a day.
Not all tanks are good brawlers and it makes it really annoying trying to play tanks like the Challenger for example when you’ve gotta do map roulette all session just for 9/10 maps to actively be against your tanks playstyle.

Yes and no. If that map is expanded towards north (t was in the begining) and one cap added there, map could become a combination of long range and CQB. Capture points are only game mechanic to ensure game can end before time runs out. True goal on every map is terrain control. Without terrain control one side cannot capture and hold cap long enough to win.

IMO the biggest issue with WT maps lays in maps being corridor maps with very limited freedom of movement and whlie having only few corridors towards capture point. This is more visible with higher BRs and vehicles getting faster.

small and rural = No Man’s Land everywhere
small and buildings = Best brawling map Rhine
large and buildings = we only have mid ones rn, but it will be driving + still close range tank cod
large and rural = Still need designing to avoid Kursk style No Man’s Land, better be Fulda or even larger

I’m not sure why but the last 2 days I have been getting large maps and I love it! You can actually strategize and utilize the speed and range of newer vehicles. Chess over checkers.

I wonder how many players simply don’t bother with War Thunder much these days because of the maps.

I’m on the hair line of quitting because GRB is such a shit show. You’ll have 1 good map among 10 crap ones which really sucks. I’ve been playing since 2013 and have never felt like this.

I’ve started just leaving games immediately if it’s a map I truly hate and I encourage others to do the same.

It does make laugh how this forum is full of those bemoaning the decline of the game then I see those same players laughing and jeering at real long term players saying they are quitting the game only to be replaced by one death leavers with a single pack vehicle.

The fact that original players are quitting over this map shambles is worrying and bad for the game.

Yeah it’s the number one issue I have with the game currently and for the last 2 years since they destroyed the maps. If I end up taking a long break, it’s due to maps. And I love how people say ‘top tier’, no, it’s every tier because other than over BR8-9 you typically play the same damn 5 maps the whole time.
BR4 and under is where they have the dumb ‘cut off half the map’ versions, which just end up in worse spawn camping/beelining, zero skill learned for beginners. SBMM them into their own baby jail and let lvl20 up enjoy an actually playable map.

Red corridor narrow map = leave and go to different lineup and keep leaving until that doesn’t come up.

They took the fun away from climbing/exploring/finding new places, now it’s just a corridor shooter, I don’t come here to play COD.
