My opinion on why World War Mode flopped was everything about it changed what people were used to. Standard war thunder is grinding and figuring out how crew slots work, how upgrades work, and how you actually get the vehicle you want in the game mode you want. A lot of work needs to be done to make the UI smoother to work with, but world war mode changed it all. They gave you free vehicles you could use at high battle ratings without earning them. The rigid and predictable progressive spawn locations made spawn camping abuse rampant, and then you had new players trying out high tier vehicles and sucking at it, bringing the whole team down and wasting all the spawn points for the players that would have done well with that vehicle. They also were confusing by introducing locations where you could leave a vehicle. In theory that could be a good game mechanic, only that if you did that and flew into the zone and left, trying to spawn back in, someone else may have already stolen your jet on your team… The game with random players doesn’t work when it makes you compete with your teammates. Gaijin has always struggled with that concept and balancing it with progression. Years ago, in ground rb you were able to shoot off tracks of teammates. If a teammate was going to cap a point without you, shooting off your teammates tracks actually benefited you so you could get on the cap point first. They try so hard to make cool game mechanics but it always seems to get in the way of their “limit player progression first” approach to everything. Then it crashes and burns. They have given players free tanks in ground rb now… which I think should be making players more upset than they are. You still have the 1+backup spawn players, but then you also get players who never played spaa at that BR getting free overpowered russian missile aa vehicles… for free. So a player who never grinded nor played that vehicle before can kill you in your vehicle that you spent 60+ bucks on or spent years grinding to and spading… See the unbalance? but Gaijin says it will make games better… haha good one. They should just add premium spaa at different rank and then it would balance things out with being fair. Anyway, that is my rant on some shortcomings of overall game mechanics that prevented World War Mode from succeeding.
