Bug Report: PL-12 / PL-12A maneuverability and energy retention behavior
Affected weapons:
PL-12 air-to-air missile
PL-12A air-to-air missile
Issue Summary
Under current gameplay conditions, PL-12 / PL-12A missiles demonstrate significantly reduced practical maneuverability and energy retention, particularly in medium-range engagements (~10 km head-on).
Observed behavior includes:
Missiles being defeated by high-G defensive maneuvers even within ~10 km head-on launches
Noticeable reduction of effective maneuver capability after motor burnout or near end of thrust phase
Apparent inability to fully utilize advertised overload performance in practical engagements
Reduced effectiveness compared to other modern BVR missiles in similar scenarios
This suggests a potential discrepancy between theoretical performance parameters and in-game flight model behavior.
Observed Performance Issues
- Maneuverability underperforming in terminal phase
Even when launched within optimal engagement range, PL-12 often fails to maintain tracking against sustained defensive rolling / high-G turns.
Public sources generally indicate:
Maximum overload: ~38G (PL-12 baseline)
However, in-game behavior suggests effective usable overload appears significantly lower in terminal phase conditions.
- Energy retention degradation
Rapid loss of speed after motor burnout
Reduced terminal energy compared to similar-generation missiles
Limited ability to correct large angular deviations late in flight
Balance Context
Compared to other third-generation BVR missiles:
AIM-120 AMRAAM
R-77 air-to-air missile
R-77-1 air-to-air missile
PL-12 / PL-12A appears to have:
Lower practical energy retention
Less effective terminal maneuver response
Reduced reliability in high-G defensive scenarios
This results in a noticeable disadvantage in high-altitude BVR combat situations.
