History: The Patrouillenboot 16 are a class of patrol boats designed to replace the Patrouillenboot P-80 class that served prior. The replacement class is built by Finnish shipyard Marine Alutech which won the tender against 4 other international shipyards after presenting a prototype of the Watercat 1250 Patrol.
A total of 14 boats comprises this class, the first 6 being built in Teijo, Finland before being outfitted in Lucerne, Switzerland. The remainder only had the hulls supplied so the added value remained in Switzerland.
The 16 in the name comes from the fact the boats were approved in the 2016 armaments program for a total of 49 million Swiss francs. The construction of the boats was commissioned in July 2018, the first boat was publicly presented in SuisseNautic in February 2019 and commissioned in May 2019. By 2021, all 14 boats were in active service.
So far, the class has had a calm and uneventful career, sailing alongside the P-80s though some sources claim that the P-80s are retired now.
