Panavia Tornado (UK versions) - Technical data and discussion

Not really sure how good the EF.3 would be compared to the GR.1 / GR.4 in game to be honest. As far as I can see the advantages would be fairly minor:

  • Two more sidewinders
  • A decent radar (but no radar missiles when ALARM is fitted)
  • A bit better flight performance.

By comparison the GR.1 / GR.4 would could carry over 4x as many ALARM missiles, and mix and match them with other ground attach ordnance in all sort sorts of combinations.

They could turn it into a premium, essentially just an excuse to make a slightly unique premium Tornado F.3

Not against that

Does the GR.4’s FLIR have IRST functionality, or does its radar have a search function?

If the GR4 has a credible means of detecting other aircraft I would probably choose that one over an EF.3.

It seems the radar on both the GR.1 and GR.4 had a basic (not pulse doppler) air to air search mode.

Thanks,

Ah that’s problematic… And do you know anything about the FLIR having any IRST functionality?

I’ve not seen anything suggesting it did. And frankly it seems unlikely that it would, it was primarily there to help the pilot navigate at night.

FLIR was used for night flying.

So only useful for Dropping JP233s onto Migs :P

Unfortunate, I suppose thats why its called a FLIR and not an IRST/EOTS/IRST-FLIR.

It doesn’t have this in the game does it? I can only find an ACM mode

Yeah the search mode is missing in game.

ridiculous

In fairness we only worked out it existed a while after the Tornado was added to the game, and we only found any details on it fairly recently. There is very little mention of it online or in books. The primary purpose of the radar was ground mapping.

Ah understandable. Still should be added though

There is a flight manual which may or may not say that there is an air-to-air search mode

NOTE: Unclassified page

Considering I got confirmation the Italian Typhoon DA.7 and trainer manuals were absolutely not okay. I seriously doubt this one is good to use, which is a shame as a modern IDS/GR manual would be really nice to have.

We just gotta wait 23 years before it gets declassified, no worries ^^

did the UK use RecceLite?
