NVIDIA DLSS 5 Is Coming to War Thunder!

I have a 3090ti, there really isn’t a point in using DLSS5 on the 3090/3090ti cards even if it was supported. The drop in framerates would be substantial. Even the 40 and 50 series cards lose FPS when using DLSS5.

The DLSS versions that the 30 series cards do support is plenty good enough. Also to note, the RTX 5070 and RTX 5070ti cards are as powerful or more powerful than both the 3090 and 3090ti (other than their amount of VRAM, which doesn’t improve framerates in this instance anyway.)

RTX 30 series cards don’t need DLSS5, and would lose too many FPS anyway. MAYBE someday if they significantly optimize DLSS5 it might be viable, but for me any reduction in FPS would keep me from using it in the first place.

my 3060 12gb is by far the weakest part of my PC. graphically i dont care for the game to look much better as it already looks good considering this is a 2012 release based on 2000s console games. raytracing is enough of a scam for your frames, this wouldnt be worth either, even if it looks more gritty

AI-generated “fake” frames can be surprisingly good.
AI upscaling and AA can look better than native these days, with much less work for the GPU.
Frame generation gets a lot of hate, but for around 10 ms of extra latency, you get more out of a 1440p 180Hz+ monitor. If you’re already getting 60 fps before frame gen, it’s worth using in most games outside competitive shooters.

Yeah, even though ray tracing looks great, I want my FPS as high as my monitor can handle 😂 Up to 240hz. For those running at 60-90 FPS, the extra graphics might be preferred, but I really don’t like it if my FPS drops below ~120. I’ve been too spoiled by high FPS rates now.

They added the DLSS 5 file on the dev server in the recent update but they havent enabled the settings yet.
We might be able to force the setting now tho.

The point/issue is that currently DLSS5 lowers FPS on all GPU’s 😉 Again, MAYBE someday optimizations can reduce the reduction in FPS, but not yet. Users have to decide for themselves if they want prettier graphics, or higher frame rates 👍

The AI algorithms don’t properly understand lighting and textures tho. In the Tomcat image you can see that the sun is behind yet it gets brighter on the dark side.

And on the Leopard image it gives it this rust bucket texture even though its a modern MBT.

Not yet. DLSS5 is still “early” in its development. Give it some time. Results will improve, and FPS will go up. Just takes time for optimizations.

Glad I got a 4090 instead of the ai slop card series.

Lol! While I’m still not a fan of “fake” AI generated frames, it still is an option. It’s not being forced on anyone 👍

Now, if they ever try to force the AI generated frames on everyone, I’ll be ready with my pitchfork lol.

For now, sadly ai is the way everythings headed. But yeah least its optional.

Sometimes, it is necessary to read the room, as it were.

The topic is controversial for reasons that completely transcend the game, and evokes strong negative emotional responses for those same reasons too.

While I will not discuss any of them (as they are technically off topic) there is at least one worth mentioning because it’s directly relevant to the topic at hand: one of the reasons people can’t stand AI is that it is being shoehorned into literally everything. You can’t go a full day without bumping into it multiple times, usually in negative ways.

Both Nvidia and DLSS 5 have been controversial for these and many other reasons for a long time. You should absolutely not be surprised to see that controversy reach WT too when DLSS 5 shows up here as well.

I don’t get the hype around DLSS 5 either, but I already was extremely skeptical of Raytracing

Currently DLSS 5 really does things make a lot worse than they would without it enabled

At least with Raytracing the main reason why it looked so bad usually was people trying to add it to (old) games that shouldn’t have Raytracing, but DLSS 5 ruins the looks of all games, not just ones that shouldn’t have it lol

The core idea of DLSS is to use AI algorithms to improve graphics. These algorithms have limited spatial understanding. The current generation of DLSS5 is mostly just an filter. The algorithm would need detailed spatial information about objects, lighting directions and locations, specularity etc of all objects and textures in the scene to produce a result that is accurate to how light behave and should behave in those scenarios. Such a feat is still too complicated for the time being and unless people even notice those small issues I pointed out (which normal people def wont) they won’t have an incentive to do so.

I also predict that this will look horrible on planes possibly because of lots of movement. I may be wrong. I have yet to see DLSS5 on aircraft.

Yup, I think you will be correct. Even the older DLSS versions had HORRIBLE ghosting in the past. I couldn’t stand it. More recently the ghosting is minimal, but I can still see it if I focus on it.

Yay! Now I can stare at PNGs in 4k ultra HD 😐
