G’day lads. Because the next Zhuhai Airshow is near, I’ve looked at some vehicles shown on the older airshows, and I’ve found this peculiar AT vehicle, which is a CSK-141 with a HJ-9A launcher system that I’m suggesting!
Description:
Spoiler
This vehicle is a CSK-141 MRAP with a HJ-9A launcher on it. The HJ-9A, also known as the Red Arrow 9A, is a sophisticated anti-tank guided missile developed by China North Industries Corporation (Norinco). This missile, which was introduced in 2005, is designed to destroy modern armored vehicles and fortifications. It utilizes semi-active millimeter wave radar for guidance and is equipped with a tandem High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead. The HJ-9A has an effective range of up to 5.5 kilometers, with a minimum range of 100 meters. It can penetrate approximately 1,200 millimeters of steel armor, even if protected by Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA). The missile can be mounted on various platforms, including trucks, armored personnel carriers, and light utility vehicles.
History:
Spoiler
The development of the HJ-9, also known as the Red Arrow 9, began in the early 1980s. This project was undertaken by China North Industries Corporation (Norinco) with the goal of creating a more advanced anti-tank guided missile system for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The HJ-9 was designed to replace the older HJ-8 system and to provide the PLA with a more capable weapon against modern armored threats.
The HJ-9 was officially unveiled to the public during a military parade in 1999, marking its entry into service. The missile system was notable for its advanced design and capabilities, which included the ability to be mounted on various platforms such as vehicles and helicopters. The development of the HJ-9 was a significant step forward for China’s military technology, as it provided the PLA with a modern and effective anti-tank weapon. It is also believed that the HJ-9 is a copy of the South African Ingwe ATGM, as they both look very similar.
Building on the success of the HJ-9, Norinco continued to develop and improve the missile system, leading to the creation of the HJ-9A. The HJ-9A was officially revealed in 2005 and was already in service with the PLA at that time. This new version featured several enhancements over its predecessor, making it even more effective in combat situations, such as using radar guidance instead of laser guidance.
The CSK-141 with the HJ-9A was showcased during Zhuhai Airshow 2022, showing its capability to mount them, and also having optics in the middle for guidance of the HJ-9A ATGM’s.
Armaments:
Spoiler
8 HJ-9A radar guided (MMW) ATGM’s with 5.5km range and penetration of 1200mm behind ERA (tandem)
Also to clear up some confusion, HJ-9 and HJ-9B are laser guided, only HJ-9A isn’t, as it’s radar guided with the help of the optics on the vehicle.
Specifications:
Spoiler
The CSK-141 alone has the following dimensions; a length of 5.8m, a width of 2.35m and at last a height of 1.86m, although it’s most likely bigger due to the HJ-9A launcher. It’s weight is around 6.1t and has a carrying capacity of 1.2t. Powering it is a Cummins ISDe 200-41 turbocharged diesel engine with 200 hp, giving it HP/T ratio of 29.7, making it go up to about 135km/h.
