Add them all!

Because there will likely just be a bunch of 10.0+ light vehicles with no MBT to pair with unless you uptier them to the Leclerc.
Ares is just one MBT that will pretty much behave like a light vehicle anyways.

Which goes back to the Panzer 87 not being critical, but it would be nice to have so there’s something to flesh out the BR range instead of leaving it dead.

Introduce a new vehicle type “recovery” or “engineering vehicle”

how?

There’s already 2 engineering vehicles.

Most recovery vehicles dont have proper offensive armaments however more engineering vehicles can be added since some of them have howitzers or similar armaments.

France has a weird AMX-30 variant with only 5-6 shots. So it’s definitely a “careful what you wish for” kind of thing.

Captured, you say?

I always wonder if we will ever see these types of vehicles in War thunder. It would provide 100% unique gameplay (they could even be used to install mines, as an extra function). That would open the door to new strategies and functions, such as mine sweepers.
I always thought it would be a lot of fun to shoot upwards with mortars. One of my best experiences in War Thunder was playing with the AVRE, it is the closest thing we have to a mortar, although it is far from it.

These vehicles could be too difficult to use with current shooting system. They might need to add a new mechanic for these types of vehicles.

This one?

Ones that use drones to find and track targets might be able to work.

or they can add a mechanic similar to wot’s artillery mechanic

For arcade mode I guess it could work, but for realistic and sim maybe give mortar vehicles the ability to scout and “calculate” the range of vehicles or points of interest. Scouting from light tanks could also give a range estimate on the map.

If only teammates were that helpful.

The artillery mechanics are already in game! Sort of…

You see, since the recon drone was added, some especially crafty players have been using it for indirect artillery.

Vehicles like BMP-3 can fire 100mm low velocity HE shell, and has the required scout drone. Guns with higher velocity (like M109) can also work, provided you have a squadmate with recon drone, and if the map is large enough. Sadly most WT maps are too small.

You fly the drone over the target and place a squad marker. The drone tells you the distance back to your tank. You aim at the squad marker, set range, and fire. Observe fall of shot in drone view, make corrections, and fire until the target is destroyed.

This isn’t a viable strategy in most games, as people rarely sit still long enough for you to hit them. But it’s interesting regardless! With some refinement I could see it becoming an official part of the game.

Oh dear lord. This sounds like the WOT artillary. With fast firing mortars That would be true cancer.

I don’t know what it’s like in WOT, but I don’t like anything I saw there.

It is clear that the current firing system is not enough for these vehicles. But it shouldn’t be impossible to develop a new shooting mechanic. It is basically shooting blindly, taking the information generated by the same intelligence that the equipment provides. They could also have scout drones and scouting capabilities. Placing mines as I already said and would even be a good opportunity to add kamikaze drones.

I don’t think it’s impossible, by any means. In addition, it opens the door to many new vehicles, sweeping systems such as the urdan, loitering munitions. It really looks fun.
We could just take out the damn fantasy artillery we currently have and replace it with real vehicles with realistic mechanics.
