France is one of the 2 foundating countries of NATO, don’t say things that sound like we joined late :p
The ancestor of NATO was an alliance between UK and France against Russia in case of needs, right after WW2.
Hence why on the official flag you have both languages, NATO/OTAN, because english is not the “only” official language of NATO.
And if you talk about the years where France “leaved” NATO, France never leave NATO: just the command center for a while, France was still an NATO member and ready to help in case of article 5 for example.
