Would also mention Ajax has LoS IR tracking and airburst ammunition similar to the PUMA with the same RoF but a higher engagement range vs aerial targets (when I looked CTA-40 was 4000 metres, PUMA was 2500).
I see no reason why the final Rapidfire could not be added to a boxer module.
yeah that i know, while they can double as anti air, they by far are not spaas
40mm cta has like 3 or 2 aerial bursr rpunds tbg im pretty sure ones similar to ahead
I mean… lmm missiles / martlets and starstreaks bolted to the side kinda does mate
its a bit massive as it currently is, with rapid movement of the cannon it might be a bit problematic
the rch 155 is gigantic but doesnt nearly move even closely as fast
That’s Rapidfire without the LMM tubes. If you didn’t know
Image abovd mine shows it with the missiles attached
Also anyone got any idea whers this comes from?
Apparently its the rapidfire or something similar…
Spoiler
Buying Skyranger would be the wrong play here, we have an off the shelf option which uses a large proportion of at least half British technology (LMM is British) CTA-40 is joint, the mounting is French. No reason we couldn’t tweak it a little to be a bit more British.
Yeah definitely not anti-air but at least publically its ahead of other IFV-turned SPAA’s like the STRF 9040, PUMA etc.
They are effectively AHEAD rounds but for the CTA-40
Its dimensions are deceivingly small.
If you look at this RCH 155 turret which i believe is similar to on boxer hull you can see the guy next to it is shorter than the whole system.
This RAPIDFIRE system is significantly smaller You can see despite it being on a pedestal the gun in the background is still taller than it and the whole system is about half the size of him, also if you consider that its replacing CIWS type systems on naval vessels.
All up i wouldnt expect it to be much larger than Skyrange 35 with a missile launcher also consider the CTA-40mm’s whole thing is that it offers 40mm level performance in a 25mm bushmaster sized package or something like that.
Eh, A) there has to be a trial under procurement rules, Skyranger is really the only other new non-US shorad out at the current time.
B) Skyranger would probably be delivered first, and there’s already a production capacity link with Rhinemetall via RBSL, who’d be making the hull anyway (assuming a boxer based chassis). Depends how urgently the MoD wants it.
whatever is picked is still probably going to be the thales system unless it turns out to be a dog
Well they can test the Rapidfire and Skyranger systems individually without mounting them on Boxer (as Rapidfire has no Boxer module yet), they are both intended and marketed for the same things SHORAD and anti-drone defence, one is France’s answer the other Germany’s.
Rapidfire uses existing British supplies without sacrificing capability compared to Skyranger. The gun is quite literally taken from an EBRC Jaguar and therefore Ajax and put into a new mount. LMM the Army have already bought thousands of LMM.
Certainly so, but that wouldn’t be the case if the MoD had any initiative. Regardless, a module would need to be designed for Rapidfire, but Germany pretty much just slapped Skyranger on a standard Boxer as the system is self contained, just like Rapidfire.
Though Skyranger can fit Stingers or equivalents they’d probably be LMM in UK service regardless. But as its modular, they’re developing it to fit laser systems which I haven’t seen mentioned to be on Rapidfire.
I can see the MoD cheaping out because they haven’t got a module ready-made but really they should go with Rapidfire. Mastiff with HELWS is too new and not tested full, but can be adopted later on in a support role.
i would assume we get a dev blog around 20th-22th since thats when the plane event stops and the tank event will start 2 days later. and im pretty sure they will start doing the other devblogs at the same time
The procurement council was not happy with the way the army handled the RCH 155 procurement, and made them start over. So going forward they’ve been very careful about doing things by the book, as it stands they’d have to trial the entire intergrated system, and I’d imagine after Ajax they’d be happy to make sure everything works before adopting something.
That looks so cursed and cool at the same time hahahah
Yeah I wouldn’t be surprised, we’d have to see if any UK company would be willing to take initiative and fund integration themselves as most of them seem to not do that. (You didn’t see BAE Systems Land making whole new Challengers just cos they could).
Shame they can’t skip steps on promising systems though lol.
But I do sincerely hope they go with Rapidfire, though I have concerns about LMM’s suitability, it doesn’t compare great compared to Stinger as a SAM missile.
Which one the RH155 artillery mount or Rapidfire?
Clarification to what?
I now have several questions, biggest one being, why is this being brought up?
No, you mustn’t post smooth lee, for he can never be seen!
