Here is a secondary source claiming the PL-12 being superior than late AMRAAM and R-77. The key is that during the CBT playtest it is in fact, worse than any other ARH provided, instead of at least being on par with MICA-RF. If anything, the PL-12 should be vastly superior than early R-77s mounted on MiG-29SMTs and have a significant edge over not only AIM-120A but also 120B, which arguably should be the starting point in the game instead of earliest AMRAAMs.
Additionally, Chinas ARH launch platform is also the worst in the beta server. Instead of gen 4s, China got stuck with a J-8F, albeit that there are no better choices. It is utterly unacceptable that such poorly depicted missiles will go onto live server alongside with arguably the worst ARH platform in the game right now.

I’m no expert on AMRAAM, but C4 variant just has shorter wings compared to AMRAAM B, with a negligible improvement in range if i recall correctly.
Real business starts at C5.
So yes, PL12 was probably underperforming in CBT, but apart AMRAAM and R77s, i’d say most of the fox3s were (some doubt on the israeli one)
I think this is largely because britain had the same view of the missile replacing the gun on the ground that the americans did in the air in the late 50s.
I mean there’s no arguments from me that China deserves J-10 platform to use their PL-12s from. J-8F is an insufficient platform when everyone else is using Gen 4.
In that source though, they state the word “possibly” meaning they’re not even sure themselves on what the range of the PL-12 should be like.
