Japan tested the 120B on the F-15J, and the F-35 uses the 120 because AAM-4 is too big to fit inside the F-35s weapon bays.

That’s because congress doesn’t let us companies export to any countries that aren’t either NATO, part of some other military alliance or basically puppet states. Russian gov doesn’t care nearly as much about who weapons go to, basically fair game as long as they aren’t at war with Russia or NATO.

AAM-4 is longer, has a larger diameter, and a much larger wingspan than AIM-120. The weapons bay on the F-35 is as small as possible in order to keep radar signature down.
