Britain inticipated a mass proliferation of Russian Gen 5 airframes and with Radar technologies of the time unable to reliably detect and track the IRST system and a long range fast IIR missile was seen as a good way to counter them.
Now of course well Stealth cannot hide if you are looking for it.
It’s not like that’s an indication for anything.
