In fairness it would appear to be a really good missile. But the extra thrust might cause the missile to have really bad manuverability at max impulse.
I love orbital strikes with PL-5Bs but Magics are also pretty nice

It only the J-7E got them, that would be peak
I think at the ranks, when radar missiles eliminate the need for long-range missiles, overload for short-range missiles is more important than range.(

I think it will keep people on their toes, if they for example approach a J-11B that is locking them they may not know whether it is a PL-12 or PL-8B. Considering the advanced IRCCM they may find it impossible to dodge if they do not guess right.
would pl8b be counterpart for early 9x? as early 9x just got way more G and better IRCCM iirc, not much range enhancement
No, the 9X is IIR and the PL-8B is multi-element, it would be a counterpart to the Python 4
