New Mobility and Steering Features - Feedback Discussion

Just did some comparisons between the live and dev server chieftain and challenger

Chieftain Mk.3

Challenger 1 Mk.2

In the case of the Chieftain Mk.3, the impact of regenerative steering is immense, it helps it get around so much more its hard to describe

In the case of the Challenger Mk.2, it struggles with its turning radius, which could be fixed with both practise or by being able to force more than 1 downshift at a time, which would help a lot, but even then, the regenerative steering helps make it faster, especially on hills

I would recommend:

  1. that the “kick down” feature being swapped to a different keybind (so that you can press it easier) or to attach it to the Cruise control gears much like it would be in the manual gearbox mode.

  2. having the ablity to kick down more than one gear at a time, which would help greatly with tightening the turning radius

  3. The ability to still use the manual track brakes so turn much harder at will

Or maybe you could use your brakes instead of going full throttle while turning… It took 3-4 seconds to turn around and shoot the tank, the same time as with the current handling. And I was even going a tiny bit faster than you (~2 km/h more)

Neutral stearing on Type 90 (and probably others)

I like the general improvement but i found the neutral stearing engagement a bit more difficult since i have to be basically at complete stop. My sugestion would be to make it neutral stear when im pressing just left or just right at lowe speeds, not just when totaly stationary. maybe under 10 kph

There seems to be some serious problems with the auto transmission using the 1st gear on Double Differential tanks, on Dual Transmission tanks you can’t even use the 1st gear no matter what, it will always shift up to 2nd.

First of all, when holding A/D and then pressing S to downshift. It simply won’t go from 2nd gear to 1st, it goes instantly to Neutral from 2nd.

You can “fix” this by pressing W instantly (while still holding A/D). Then the tank will shift up to 1st and keep turning in the 1st gear.
However! You have to keep holding W too (while also holding A/D), while in other gears the tank keeps going with just A/D. If you let go of W while turning in 1st gear the tank goes to Neutral gear.

And to make it even more complicated: while you are turning in 1st gear (by holding W and A/D) if you change direction (so for example let go of A and hold down D, while still holding W) the tank shifts up to 2nd gear.

This is kinda a huge problem since the turning radius of the 2nd gear is often around 2x as much compared to the 1st gear.

Would you mind doing a report for the increase in speed issue?

It is so nice being able to turn your tank while you are driving up hill, with the old steering the way you lost speed while turning and going up hill at the same time, made it near impossible to turn on a hill.

I hope it is not intentionally, since you are suddenly locked to only being able to turn with your tank at max throttle until you hit the maximum speed at your current gear.

Honestly, the more i play around with double differential steering the more clunky it feels. What i mean with this is not the new driving mechanic that is clunky, that is awesome and feels a lot more smooth and fluid. It is instead more the controls that feel clunky.

Examples of why i feel that it feels clunky to control:
When you turn while going forwards, your tank is forced to go full throttle, and then tops the speed in your current gear. You can release the forward button, and it still makes you go forward full speed as long as you keep turning. As long as you have any forward speed, you will begin to accelerate when trying to turn.

Reversing does not function with the new steering scheme in the same way. You need to hold reverse constantly to reverse at the same time, otherwise the tank stops and turns on the spot.

The automatic gearbox suddenly is non functional while turning. What i mean is that if you start turning in 2nd gear, and it tops at 7km/h, then you need to stop turning to be able to turn at a faster speed, at the same time. Currently it feels a lot more like manual transmission mode when turning that the automatic transmission mode. So while turning it is the gear you are in that is regulating the speed, instead of the speed of the tank that is regulating the gearbox.

Suggesting for improvement:
If i had to change how the double differential currently works, I would say that you need to hold the button for forward to accelerate while turning, and it should not continuously accelerate when you only are holding the button to turn. This is to make it possible to regulate the speed while turning.

At the same time it should also be able to go up and down in gears automatically like it does when you just go forward. So if the tank changed gear from 4th to 5th at 18km/h when going forward, it would do the same when turning, and likewise if it changed from 5th to 4th at 14km/h because you are not accelerating, it would also go down in gear.
While this will increase the turning radius when turning, with it going from one gear up, this will be able to be regulated by you releasing the button for forward.

This is exactly the problem, which is why i keep suggesting improvements to the controls.

just let us kick up and down gears like we used to and the problem is fixed

It’s an improvement but I honestly don’t think it’s ready this update, it’s still too janky at low speeds while maneuvering around tight spaces or around dead tanks, it feels like I’m constantly fighting to stop the vehicle moving forward without touching W, at low speeds it feels like if you’re holding W and A it’s forcing you forward even if you let go of W it’ll continue to rev like you didn’t even let go of the forward input. Currently it’s great for motoring about in big open maps but any urgent movements like a tank pops up and you need to duck into cover it all falls apart.

that’s exactly what it is doing, currently holding A and releasing W locks W on while tapping S and W changes from throttle to gear shifts.

Still.
Make this togglable or just don’t introduce it.
Fairly worsening the experiences for most TT, trash mechanic tbh. No one really care about how tanks steers irl since we are not using tanks like they did irl. Tanks in warthunder is doing some infantry stuff so keep em moving like infantries for good.

I like regen steering but I completely understand what you mean. It feels like Gaijin is trying to slap regen steering on the already not so great control mechanics. Ideally the entire system should be rebuilt from the ground up, together with the automatic transmission and the engine sounds (right now they are completely detached from the actual RPM)

At the moment there are a ton of little bugs that just makes the experience worse. Like I’ve noticed on neutral steering tanks that sometimes when you stop and let’s say hold A it won’t just simply start rotating right. First it starts rotating to the left for half a second and then starts going to the right lol

And then there are the bugs where the new handling doesn’t really want to use the 1st gear. They just have to keep improving the whole system.

They’ve already said that Double Differential and Dual Transmission stuff is not coming this update no matter what.

Yeh i don’t like it, it’s a faff just driving, the amount of input just to move about compared to before is ridiculous imo, it needs a lot of refinement at low speeds

Good

1000% yes please. Not being able to steer at all when breaking is one of the main things that makes this testing of RS still feel super akward and meh.

Changing that would be a massive improvement.

yeah, they just needed a refinement of the auto shift to make it shift at top range instead of bottom range, not this voodoo code quick time inputs, pretty sure most of these tanks are autos anyway you literally just slow down and it down shifts.
I mean How many cars do you know, manual or auto, that accelerate if you take the foot off the accelerator but turn the wheel? the current system is highly counter intuitive.

depends, the type 90/10s have been amazing in both these tests, the Leo2 seems a lot better this time around, the Abrams is pretty damn bad currently at all speeds

Well automatic cars do start moving if you put them in D and don’t hold the brake, though definitely not at full throttle lmao So maybe that’s why Gaijin made it like this? I have no idea if it’s the same for tanks though

I mean yeah, the break doubles as a clutch to some degree (I think, I haven’t driven auto in 25 years and I never want to again, I hate them) hell I learned to drive on a crash box Chevy Blitz, one of these things:

So even synchro mesh is a bit of a luxury to me

The only automatic car I’ve driven (and only once) is a 2023 Rav4 so it’s not like I have much experience either haha And it had a CVT (or e-CVT) too so not even a “normal” automatic.

That thing must be really fun to drive though!
