New Air SIM Objectives: CAS Requests

This is a proposal for a new Interactive objective to use certain types of guided munitions in Air SIM.

The OBJ would appear within EC maps on the OBJ list:

The CAS request would only appear to those with the appropriate munitions and targeting POD.
CAS request mission Objectives can be a unique, high reward objective; They take time and patience to carry out. Not having air superiority would greatly increase risk. The OBJ would display as a red diamond with a “!” in it.

The exact details of the mission are then only displayed for whatever player checks in to the radio call.

What is the Mission?
In EC, the scenario would be Special Forces ground teams are working behind enemy lines. Two distinct scenarios would work well within this scenario:

  1. Troops in Contact! (TIC) A small number of friendly commandos have become pinned down from enemy fire and need air support.
    -OR-
  2. HVT mission! A reconnaissance team has identified a high value target (HVT) and needs to call in a precision strike.

Since these are both delicate missions requiring precise munitions and skill, the exact location within the affected grid will not show up to just any friendly player… they must check in to the Controller on the ground and receive the instructions.

What would that look like?

CAS calls consist of a Check in of the available aircraft to the Controller on the ground and then a subsequent brief. For simplicity, the check in is done by the Player selecting it once he is within 2 grid squares of the objective grid in any direction.

War Thunder players can use the multifunction menu to pull up a “Check-In” option – or it can be a hot key. A progress bar would come up of about 10 seconds and be supplemented by a preset dialogue exchange.

Once the progress bar is complete, the controller briefs the Pilot on the situation.
For either scenario, the audio could be a simplified dialogue meant to be both cinematic while still capturing key pieces of information. The target description and location is key.

In real life, the Controller on the ground would give coordinates, (such as a military grid reference MGRS coordinate) – since the MGRS system is not used in War Thunder, an alpha/numeric code could be given to the player via dialogue. The player would have to carefully remember this prompt to “input the data” into targeting pod.

Within the Multifunction menu or controls, an option to input coordinates would work well. It could be called data link, or input target grid, or something similar.
This would pull up a command prompt, which the player would have to input the same Alpha Numeric code, (or whatever is used), which simulates giving the targeting pod the location.

From there, the targeting pod now locks on, simulating a targeting cycle that the player can access.

imputing the wrong code would prompt the Controller to have to repeat the call, wasting valuable time.

Once checked in, with the vital coordinates input correctly, the player’s targeting pod will now show the target.

The player will then have to orient and drop on the target like he would any other.

-For the HVT mission, if successfully destroyed, it is devastating to the tickets of the opposing team.
-For the Troops in Contact mission, if you save the ground force from getting overran, it adds tickets to the friendly team. *Using a munition that is too large could kill the friendly troops on the ground – choose wisely.

Having done this many times in real life, they are extremely intense situations – New Dialogue options would be very exciting for the players and give a new immersive way to play SIM. It would also prompt more team work as other players would be able to help cover the play attempting the CAS call.

Three similar but distinct dialogue sets per scenario would provide enough diversity to keep them new and fresh.

This could be an exciting way to revitalize SIM EC matches

Omg. This is awesome, yes absolutely yes. Would kill for TIC objectives

I tried submitting a HVT objective before, but the suggestion got denied, so that would be awesome too.

(Something akin to the HVT strike in “Harrier: How to be a fighter pilot” would be interesting gameplay variation)

Would be awesome right on the heels of gaijin introducing infantry as well

Why only guided munitions?

This can work just fine with dumb bombs, HVARs and gun strafes at propeller brackets.

Being told that “Train is being loaded at X” where you need to do a dive/glide-bomb precision strike in a P-47 or stuka is an example of HVT.

And the troops in contact is a classic “Corsair(“Whistling Death”)/Hellcat/b25/b26/il-8 goes to town carpetbombing enemy frontline” type of objective.

I support the suggestion, but why only jets?
Props also exist.

Indeed- props do exist- and close air support situations did occur with controllers on the ground during that time. However, with no pods it was even more imperative that friendly location, enemy location, orientation, marking, ingress and egress information etc… was all passed via radio. While it would be super awesome to do this, you’re talking about an infinite amount of new dialogue lines. The idea with having the targeting pod was to cut down on the degree of dialogue required for Gaijin to hire new voice actors. Trust me, I would love for it to be so realistic that a talk on must occur every time… but I doubt we will get there until much much later.

Now what they could do, is make it similar to any other bombing target, but have it marked with smoke or some kind of BR appropriate marker… this would be a common occurrence- that way, props or planes with dumb bombs would still have a target to hit. Orientation would still be hard to work out however. Because without the controller on the ground letting you know “enemy marked with smoke, friendlies to the east, advise north to south reciprocal run” you could end up spreading that napalm right into the friendly force.

I would even love where there are situations that are so tight with distances, that it warrants a strafing fun just to suppress enemy units- but this would also be very dialogue heavy.

Does that make sense?
