Mitsubishi G4M2a Model 24 Hei (一式陸上攻撃機二四丙型)
The Mitsubishi G4M2a Model 24 Hei is a Japanese long-range medium bomber created in 1944. This aircraft received better nose armament and a few other improvements. About 300 aircraft in this version were built, some were later converted into G4M2e Tei bombers.
History
During the production of the Mitsubishi G4M2a Model 24 ostu aircraft, it was noted that placing the H6 radar on the tip of the nose of the aircraft made it difficult for the forward gunner to fire against enemy aircraft from the front. It was decided to move the radar to the top of the nose instead of the tip. After this modification, it was noticed that there was more space in the nose windshield of the aircraft, so at first they wanted to mount a Type 99 model 2 cannon there, but it turned out to be too big, so a Type 2 13.2 mm machine gun was used, which was a copy of the German MG 131 machine gun, which the Japanese obtained from the Me 210 A-1 heavy fighter. The modified aircraft was renamed G4M2a Model 24 Hei and was introduced into service in 1944. These machines were used in various missions until the end of the war, and some were converted into mother aircraft for the Ohka aircraft and received the designation G4M2e Model 24 Tei. At least one G4M2a Model 24 Hei aircraft was captured by the British.
Construction description
The Mitsubishi G4M2a Model 24 Hei aircraft is structurally almost identical to the G4M2a Model 24 Ostu, but there are two differences between them, which I will present here.
- Changed the 7.7mm Type 92 nose machine gun to the 13.2mm Type 2 machine gun
- Moved the H6 radar transmitting antenna from the tip of the nose of the aircraft to the top of the nose.
- A defensive machine gun was now installed on the tip of the nose
