Right now it seems they’re booth equivalent performance wise. However, the AAM-4 weighs almost double the AIM-120A so it’s a bit harder to justify carrying more weight just to get similar performance. That being said, step in the right direction and I hope they eventually buff it so it’s better.
In addition, it’s only strange because we have both options right now on the F-15J. Later with the F-2 since, as far as we know, it can only use the AAM-4s, it will at least be competitive.
I don’t think we should expect more than that for now, because of balance reasons. Now they are very close to each other, so, yeah, F-2 won’t be weaponless
Now that we have more advanced RWR through Rafale/EFT, should we maybe take a look at the F-15J(M) again with J/APR-4A or J/APR-4B as I think that’s what it should have? (along with the future F-2)?
I’d imagine it would also have coverage into the K band and maybe coverage from more angles, so would be a worthwhile change
J/APR-4B is just J/APR-4A that has been modified to interface with the J/APQ-1 MAWS iirc. Dunno what J/APR-4A does though over J/APR-4. Probably just better reliability, more targets ID’d, and better coverage like into the K band like you said.
I don’t have any documentation but that would definitely be nice to suggest and change on the F-15J(M) and for future F-2, mostly for ground RB since that’s only where the K band would matter currently (still important).
Japan paid Boeing $450 million to upgrade their F-15Js. This upgrade will, among other things, include installing a new AESA radar (AN/APG-82(v)1) and AN/AAR-57 missile warning system.
It would be cool if somewhere in the future we saw this version in War Thunder as well.
Hey is there a source for this? All i remember reading is “increased missile load” in reports/blogs about the upgrades. I always assumed F-15Js could already use 8 MRMs considering they have AMRAAMS and the missile pylons to use them on the wings in inventory doesnt really seem like an upgrade when they can in theory already do that.
Do they mean 8 AAM-4s? I also believed the possibility of a higher load >8 missiles. But please correct me.
Since when are they pulling better? From my own experience they seem to have pretty much the same pull with slightly more drag than 120 after burning out
Tests show that they do turn sharper off the rails. Plus that and better tracking targets near the ground and higher explosive mass still make it good for short range shots compared to AMRAAMS.
Right now with F-15JM
AIM-120- long range kills
AMM-4- shorter range shots.
Really AAM-4 should exceed the AMRAAM in long range performance but sadly not.
