Hello everyone, and welcome to this new suggestion!

Today, I’m presenting an iconic aircraft of the French Air Force: the Mirage 2000N in its K3 standard.

The Mirage 2000N is the nuclear-powered attack version of the Mirage 2000 fighter jet, developed from the Mirage 2000B as part of France’s nuclear deterrence strategy and long-range strategic strike capabilities. Designed to carry the ASMP (Air-Sol Moyenne Portée - Air-to-Ground Medium-Range) missile, this two-seat aircraft is distinguished by its specific role: it combines the high maneuverability and supersonic performance of the Mirage family with a unique ability to deliver nuclear weapons.
Throughout its service life, the Mirage 2000N has benefited from several upgrades, known as standards, designed to integrate new technologies and improve its performance. The K3 standard represents the most advanced version of the Mirage 2000N family (excluding special versions like the 303). Integrating a GPS link as well as the ability to fire the brand new ASMP-A nuclear missile, the K3 standard also benefits from the improvements brought by the previous standard (K2 standard) allowing it to use conventional unguided air-to-ground weapons (Note: there are many images of Mirage 2000Ns with guided weapons, however this weaponry can only be fired, the Mirage 2000N cannot guide these bombs itself, see note). These improvements ensure the Mirage 2000N remains a credible nuclear strike platform while maintaining its high effectiveness in conventional ground attack and interdiction missions.

The Mirage 2000N K3 is used by several French Air Force squadrons specializing in nuclear deterrence and strategic attack, where it provides crew training and operational readiness for the air force. Thanks to its range, weapons-carrying capacity, and sophisticated systems, it has also been deployed in international exercises and power projection missions, contributing to France’s security posture.
The K3 standard demonstrates the commitment to maintaining the Mirage 2000N at the forefront of air and strategic technology throughout its service life. It represents a major evolution compared to previous standards, offering complete integration of the ASMP missile and modern navigation and attack systems, while ensuring adaptability to conventional or nuclear missions. This aircraft thus played a central role in French air deterrence until the beginning of the gradual arrival of the Rafale F3 and F4 in the forces.

Characteristic

The aircraft’s dimensions are identical to those of other two-seater Mirage 2000 variants, such as the Mirage 2000B and Mirage 2000D:

  • Wingspan: 9.13 m
  • Length: 14.36 m
  • Height: 5.20 m
  • Wing Area: 41.0 m²

The Mirage 2000N is powered by the SNECMA M53-P2 engine, the same turbofan found on the Mirage 2000B, C, and D. Originally, the aircraft was intended to be equipped with the SNECMA M53-3, but this plan was later revised.

Equipment

Radar:

The Mirage 2000N features the Antilope 5 radar, which was later integrated into the Mirage 2000D. This radar is optimized for low-altitude penetration, ensuring maximum effectiveness in delivering nuclear strikes.

Defensive Systems:

The Mirage 2000N K2 is equipped with a suite of defensive systems, including:

  • The Serval RWR (Radar Warning Receiver) for detecting enemy radar threats.
  • The DDM (Détecteur de Départ Missile), a missile approach warning system also present on other Mirage 2000 variants.
  • The Alkan LL5063 decoy launcher, capable of deploying chaff and flares to counter radar-guided and infrared-seeking missiles.

Note

I’m making this note to add the following sources before someone claims that the Mirage 2000N can use guided weapons solo.

As stated in the sources below (the source is a hearing with the French Air Force commander at the french assembly, so it’s difficult to find anything more official).

“We will therefore fly patrols composed of Mirage 2000Ds – which have a pod to guide bombs – and
Mirage 2000Cs or 2000Ns – which cannot carry a pod, but can drop bombs.”

Weapons

The Mirage 2000N K3 is equipped with different weapons allowing it to accomplish its different missions.

AA Missile :

  • Magic 2

AG Missile :

  • ASMP-A

Bomb :

  • SAMP Type 21
  • SAMP Type 21 200
  • Mk82
  • Mk82 Snakeye
  • BAP-100
  • BAT-120
  • BGL-66
  • Durandal

It should be noted that this aircraft does not have an internal cannon and no gun pod was used on it.

The aircraft also uses different external fuel tanks of 1300, 1700 or 2000 liters.

Generally, the aircraft carries 2 Magic self-defense missiles, 2 2000 liter tanks under the wings and either a nuclear missile or an assortment of 5 to 6 smooth bombs under the fuselage.

PLEASE NOTE: The various images showing the aircraft with an ATLISS targeting pod and AS30L or GBU/BGL were taken at the Paris Air Show. The carriage is not realistic and was only used for demonstration purposes, as the aircraft cannot use the attached equipment.

This version of the Mirage 2000N is the most advanced variant of the standard Mirage 2000N (excluding the test version). This version boasts unique and original gameplay, making it a particularly interesting addition to the French tech tree.
