1) Minerva Class II Series - Fenice F557
MM Fenice F557

The Corvette “Fenice F557” is one of the eight Corvettes of the “Minerva Class” and is part of the II series, it was built by the Cantieri Navali del Muggiano, it was laid down on 5 March 1987, launched on 7 April 1990 and delivered to the Navy on 4 December 1990. These Corvettes are almost entirely Italian-made in all their structural and electronic components, with regard to the tasks assigned to this type of Unit, anti-aircraft capability has been given maximum priority in all its components while observing flexibility of use that makes them suitable for carrying out the defense of coastal convoys. The appearance of the Minerva class corvettes recalls, with more elegant and modern solutions, those of the Gabbiano class, with a high and slender bow that connects to a bulb with an exclusive hydrodynamic function. The hull is made of steel with a long forecastle that extends to just under 20 meters from the stern to which it is connected by a small rectangular deckhouse, the stern is mirrored, the adoption of 11-meter long stabilizing and anti-roll fins allow a reduction from 30° to 3° of the roll of the units. The propulsion system consists of two Diesel G.M.T. BM.230.20 DVM engines, which provide a maximum continuous power of 11,000 hp, connected via gearboxes to two-line shaft joints at the ends of which there are two variable pitch propellers with a diameter of 2.95 meters that allow the units to reach a maximum speed of 25 knots and a range of 3,500 miles with a speed of 18 knots. The auxiliary services on board are powered by four Isotta Fraschini Motori ID-36-SS-12V generator sets which provide an electrical power of 2,600 kW. The electronic systems include a SPS-774 (RAN-10S) surface detection RADAR, a SMA SPS-728 navigation RADAR, a Selenia MM/SPG-75 (RTN-30X Orion) RADAR of the Elsag Dardo-E fire control system for the guidance of the Aspide missiles and the control of the 76/62 mm Compact cannon. The electronic systems are completed by the Pegaso NA-18L optronic fire control system, which in case of radar silence or in the presence of ECM signals, which inhibit the use of the RTN-30X radar, ensures an optical and IR (infrared rays with TV and thermal camera) line of fire to the forward gun, by the IFF Mk XII apparatus, by the Selenia SLQ-747 (INS-3) ESM/ECM electronic warfare suite, by two Barricade type “chaff/decoy” rocket launchers, by the SLQ-25 Nixie towable acoustic jammer. The hull active sonar is the Raytheon-Elsag DE-1167 low frequency with underwater telephone. The Elmer communications system, the Navstar GPS navigation system, the Mini-SADOC (Automatic System for the Direction of Combat Operations) combat system and inertial navigation system are present. The armament consists of an Oto Melara 76/62mm compact gun, two Oto-Melara/Oerlikon KBA 25/80mm, (these KBA 25/80mm were added to some units of the Minerva Class in the early 2000s, the Corvette “Fenice” was one of these) an 8-cell surface-to-air missile launcher system Albatros/Aspide (16 missiles in total) and two WASS B515/3 (324mm) triple torpedo tubes for Mk.46 torpedoes or A244 lightweight torpedoes. Between 2015 and 2019 all the “Minerva Class” Corvettes were decommissioned, the “Fenice F557” was finally scrapped in 2023.
