Aircraft history:

Spoiler

The work on this variant of the MiG-29 named product 9-13S began in 1985 after chief designer of the Phazotron design office Adolf Tolkachev would leak detailed data about the latest Soviet aircraft’s radar systems to western intelligence, thanks to this the west would learn about all the strengths and weaknesses in all of the latest Soviet combat aircraft. The soviets would quickly start development of improved variants of their aircraft after the leak including the 9-13S. Majority of the effort would be put in to improving its aircraft’s electronics such as the improved N019M Topaz radar based on the previous N019 Rubin model and integrating the latest weapons systems in to the aircraft’s arsenal such as the ARH R-77 and SARH and IR R-27ER/ET. Testing would begin with a few units of already existing 9-12 units being upgraded with the new N019M Topaz to test and evaluate the new upgrades and would take to the skies in 1985/1986. Testing of both aircraft would be done by August 1989. And Production of the new 9-13S would start in 1989 at the Moscow no. 30 plant replacing the production of the older outgoing 9-12/9-13 models and the first serial production variant would take to the skies on December 23rd 1990. However the production of the 9-13S would be severely affected by the collapse of the Soviet union in 1991 and the following economic crisis in the new Russian federation. The MiG-29S would find itself among the group of purchases and projects cut by the new budget cuts and the VVS and VMF would not buy any more units of the 9-13S. In the end 46 units would be produced of the new 9-13S standard and only 16 would be delivered to the VVS.
