From where did you get 15 G for R-40D? Far as I know we have only data for basic R-40 which have 15 G in air and 2.5 G of target. And for R-40D we have 4 G of target if I remember correctly.

According to the manual MiG-25 is a 4.5G aircraft. 4,5G is 6.75Gs if we take 150% safety margin into consideration. So, at 6.76Gs the aircraft should start to disassemble

ATM the MiG-25 can pull 8Gs with 0 problem. How so

It’s 5.7gs max from what I’ve seen for max without damage.
4.5 gs is for typical service

one MiG-25PD pulled 11.5Gs in a dive without structural damage once. Airframe did deform and was decomissioned, but not fell apart.

is deforming not structural damage? If it had to be decommissioned then its obviously not rated for it

Pilot didn’t had to do an emergency landing, so technically airframe was still airworthy, but obviously unsafe. And yeah, MiG-25 was not rated for 11.5Gs obviously, but at that time tests for airframe destruction weren’t a thing in USSR, airframe withstood required G-load and thats enough.

People close to aircraft engineering inclined to believe that stress engineers calculated MiG-25 airframe with a decent reserve due to relatively unknown materials and techniques in aircraft design, which isn’t the first case of such thing in USSR history (LaGG-3 also was over calculated due to delta wood being unknown material at the time)

@kizvy pilot testimonies obviously don’t count, but in an interview with MiG-25 test pilots and engineers B. Orlov (test pilot) said that it was allowed to put 5G of overload with aircraft weight of 30 tonnes. He also said that at mach 2.5 you could do maneuvers with 3-4Gs of overload

Yeah I agree that 4.5 gs was some safety limit thing, I found another primary source that gave 5.7 gs as max overload.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the mig-25 could do those g loads at those ridiculous speeds, just that pilots would be killed by ground crew if they do do go over safety margins lol

probably not even ground crew but command. If by pulling 11.5Gs airframe still could fly to some extent - pulling 8-9Gs would probably just reduce service life, similarly to flight above mach 3. Honestly, the more i dig around MiG-25 the more i realise how much undeserved badmouthing it gets despite being quite capable and incredible aircraft

I think it’s mostly because some people think it’s an f-15 equivalent due to dumb stories online, from magazines/blah blah and then they’re disappointed when it’s not even close to being like that.
They expect the mig-25 to be a su-27 made in the 60s lol
