Description: The BF109 F4 was a German fighter of the Second World War. The F4 was the last and most advanced variant of the F4 version, equipped with the DB601E engine, a 20 mm MG151 cannon in the propeller nozzle, and two 7.9 MG17 machineguns. Additionally, the armor of the cockpit was increased to 6 mm to give the pilot better protection. They were produced in 1941 and used extensively by the German Air Force. It was mid-1943 when the Regia Aereonautica signed with the Germans a contract for 15 Bf109 F4 and other various BF109 versions. At that time, the Italian industries were not able to produce enough G55, C205, and Re2005 to replace the older G50, Re2000, and C200 in service, so foreign fighters were ordered as a stop-gap. When the units arrived, they were deployed at the airport in Sciacca, Sicily. Here they were not to fight the enemy fighters but to train the pilots to fly on better 109 models (like the G2). But considering the time being, very likely those “training” units were used in combat since Italy needed in the air every fighter that was available to counter the allied bombers. When the Allies landed on Sicily and arrived at Sciacca’s airport, they managed to get their hands on a damaged unit that was missing a wing. It’s unclear what the other 14 units were, but most likely they were moved to another airport on the Italian mainland or destroyed.
Why it should be in game: It could be a good adddition in the premium/event branch of the tree
