Merge target cyclic switching and radar cue controls into one feature.

This topic is about the “Target Cycling” option for selecting targets on radar versus the “Radar cueing” method.

The “Targets cyclic switching of aircraft/ground radar” option can either be set to Yes or No. The way this currently works is:

Set to Yes:

  • Radar contacts are automatically selected if the IFF does not return as friendly
  • Pressing the “Select Radar/IRST target to lock” cycles between all available targets in an imposed order
  • Radar cueing works but only for moving the radar (tilt and yaw), there is no target selection cursor

Set to No:

  • Radar cueing fully works with the 3 axis controls acting both as radar tilt, pitch, and cursor range selection
  • Unless your are in TWS, cursor does not “snap” to radar contact and allows precise selection of wanted targets
  • Allows the user to lock targets that are NOT shown on your radar by pressing lock over their position (you can do this on fade away contacts for example)

How merging both mechanics into one would work:

  • Radar cueing fully works with the 3 axis controls acting both as radar tilt, pitch, and cursor range selection
  • Pressing the “Select Radar/IRST target to lock” would “snap” the cursor onto the first available contact and then cycle between all available targets when pressed again
  • Cueing the radar horizontally or vertically (yaw & range) would “unsnap” and revert back to manual cursor cueing

In terms of gameplay mechanic I feel like this would allow the user to have more control over their radar whilst keeping it easy for those that just want target cycling. It would also allow users that prefer radar cueing to quickly react to new contacts with the “Select Radar/IRST target to lock” control, but keep the manual cueing for more specific occasions.

In terms of realism, radar cueing has always been manual since early radars but later systems offer this cycling option even on RWS (SRC PD).

If this seems too complex, a control to switch between both modes would be very much appreciated.
