I’ve been activiating aerobatic smoke whenever I’m about to get jumped by say, some Swedish dorito or something and they usually just go away or don’t attack. Thing is though, I have no idea what doing that means, like why do they just stop and go do something else.

I don’t know if there is any agreed upon meaning. But when I do it, I’m sending a message to enemies that chase me. Smoking makes you easy to see. When I pop smoke, I am telling the enemy that there is no point in chasing me, as I am aware of their presence, or they won’t catch me.

Yeah that too, sometimes when a guy is chasing me but I start outspeeding him, i use aerobatic smoke to tell them that they’re not getting the kill
Years ago, it was often used as a way to ask for mercy.
Like when your plane is heavily damaged and you are limping back to the af. You would pop smoke as a way of saying “please let me land”
Or if you were a bomber, you would pop smoke to say “please let me drop my bombs before you kill me”.

I’ve been playing since start of 2016 - never heard of that.
I doubt it was universal.
Whenever i popped smoke in those situations, they left me alone. I did the same when others did it.
Ehhh, that was only one way of looking at it.
The other and frankly more prevalent way I think was the “I see you and I’m not afraid/about to stunt on you” message.
SB it’s a last-ditch “come help me, I’m about to die so I’m rather risking alerting more enemies than delay help.”
Alternatively,
“I’m bored come fight me.”

Usually means you want to be a friend, want to be left alone bombing, or typical ‘smoke if racist’ comments.
For sure. It means something different to different people.
I doubt most people see it as i do now. The playerbase has changed a lot since then

I sometimes like using the New Year’s aerobatic smoke from the 2020/2021 event since it emits a pretty voluminous and sparkly cover behind the wingtips of your aircraft compared to other aerobatic smoke options, which can actually save you if the enemy plane is directly close on your rear and has guns only (extra points if they have relatively bad aim).
