Malyshev T-80UD 478B (Breza)

The Ukrainian/Soviet T-80UD 478B (Breza) is a variant of the T-80 series developed in the late 1980s as an alternative to the gas turbine powered models. Instead of a turbine engine, it was equipped with the 1,000 HP 6TD-I diesel engine, which was more fuel-efficient and better suited for large-scale production. The T-80UD 478B also featured improved protection against depleted uranium penetrators compared to its predecessors, along with the addition of explosive reactive armour.

Armaments & Engine

  • 125mm 2A46M-1
  • 7.62mm Coaxal PKT
  • 12.7mm NSVT
  • 1,000 HP 6TD-I Engine

Malyshev T-80UD 478DU

The T-80UD 478DU was one of two variants of the T-80UD series tested in Pakistani demonstration trials prior to the country’s procurement of T-80UDs. This version replaced the standard suspension of the T-80UD 478B (Breza) with a modified system and aluminium road wheels with steel rims, based on the T-64 design. Little is known about the 478DU beyond the fact that it lost the trials to the standard T-80UD 478B, which would later evolve into the 478DU1 and 478BE variants.

The T-80UD 478DU1 was the first variant tailored specifically for Pakistan and its desert environment. The initial batch of 15 T-80UDs delivered, essentially standard 478B (Breza) models, failed to meet Pakistani military requirements, prompting threats to cancel the contract. In response, Ukraine began retrofitting the 478B with improvements such as the Buran-Catherine E thermal imager, the KBA-3 125mm tank gun, the 6TD-II engine (only some units), and other domestically produced components. These upgrades eventually brought the tanks up to Pakistani standards, and the improved version was accepted into service as the T-80UD 478DU1.

Pakistan later introduced its own locally produced components, including the 125mm Smooth Bore Chrome Plated Autofrettaged (SBCPA) tank gun, new breeches, various general parts, and ammunition. Additionally, some T-80UD 478DU1s were retrofitted in Pakistan with 6TD-II engine kits supplied by Ukraine.

Armaments & Engine

  • 125mm KBA-3 or 125mm SBCPA
  • 7.62mm Coaxal PKT
  • 12.7mm NSVT
  • 1,000 HP 6TD-I Engine or 1,200 HP 6TD-II Engine + improved transmission (-33km reverse, same as Oplot)

Little is known about the T-80UD 478BK (Breza Katanaya) beyond the fact that it was designed at the Malyshev Plant Design Bureau and first completed in 1993. It was the first T-80UD variant to use the newly designed welded turret. The KBA-3 125mm gun was developed around the same time, possibly specifically for export to Pakistan. Many of these features would later influence the design of the T-80UD 478BE.

Really rare find I made when doing thorough research on the T-80UD back in late 2024/early 2025.

The T-80UD, seen in the video undergoing trials in Pakistan, can be identified as the 478B variant - the same basic model that initially led Pakistan to threaten cancelation of its trade deal with Ukraine over

Another video found. This time it appears to be the T-80UD/BE.

Interestingly it shows very clearly the true shape of the new turret.

Fantastic find, this video contains a lot of information and helps bridge the gaps in knowledge I had about the T-80UD 478DU1/BE. This video contains the fire control system and the design process of the vehicle which would indicate the production of new tank gun for the vehicle, supporting my claim of it operating with the KBA-3 125mm tank gun.

This image of the tank gun being assembled also shows slight differences when compared to the Russian 2A46 even if minor, I strongly do believe most Pakistani T-80UDs were at one point equipped with the KBA-3.

I’ll further look into the video tomorrow frame by frame and try to get a translation of the video as well

Missing the standard DU but very informative

Unfortunate how lazily the devs implemented ingame model

Unfortunately I don’t think the redesignation of the tank gun in-game will ever happen, multiple of my bug reports have been closed for incredibly dumb reasons and it’s very apparent that nearly all of the individuals managing my bug reports haven’t done a thorough enough job reading through all the sources and information provided.

Instead of correcting blatant issues in their game, Gaijin and their employees would prefer to keep details the same way they are, I’m genuinely curious on the sources they’ve used to determine the fact that the vast majority of Pakistani T-80UDs operate with the 2A46M-1.

Issues with the T-80UD/DU1 in-game will persists and any attempts to remedy them will be immediately shut down.

Tech mods will give horrible excuses when it is clear that gaijin is simply just being lazy

The new FCS module for the T-80UD 478DU1 is surprisingly accurate with the presence of a commanders display tied to the gunners sight (Buran-Catherine E thermal imager), same gunners electronic unit as found on the T-84 BM Oplot-T and the same commanders electronics unit as found on the regular T-80UD 478B on the right side of the turret.

Rare time Gaijin doesn’t mess up the model for a Pakistani and/or Chinese vehicle

Did they finally fix the engine model? Last time I checked it still has the V84 engine model instead of its 6TD engine model in the X-ray viewer

Yeah, it now has the correct engine model and that being the 6TD-1.

This wasn’t the case prior, like as you’ve stated

Took them long enough lol

I don’t know how they did this but the T-80UD/DU1s designation has been reverted back to the T-80UD/BE post update, most likely just a error.

Yes, this image was taken in the live server today

ye i mentioned this in the server, its silly.

@Smin1080p_WT

can we ask why the fixed bug report was reverted without mention?

@Gunjob

Is there any internal awareness of this issue? It was inadvertently reverted in one of last years update and has remained in its current state since. Further details are outlined in the bug report, but in short: the designation of the T-80UD/BE is incorrect and should be displayed in-game as the T-80UD/DU1, as it was after the fix and prior to the November update last year.

I don’t believe submitting an entirely new bug report is appropriate, as this is an already acknowledged issue, and doing so would only complicate the matter.

If not, could you please forward this issue to anyone who this may concern, thank you (and if a bug report is necessary, please do tell me).

There might be new evidence to suggest that the current designation is correct…

So yeah it seems the 2 vehicles that were trialed were the T-80UD-DU, T-80UD/DU-1. And the 2 vehicles that were accepted into service were named: T-80UD/BE AND T-80UD/BE-1.
Some of these 2 later have also undergone limited 6TD-II retrofit.

Although tbf the correct internal designations are:
T-80UDBEsbSB and T-80UDBEsb-1SB

Regarding the T-80UD/DU1 hypothetical you’ve brought up, I’m quite not so sure, but it’s factually proven that the T-80UD/DU was indeed one of two variants of T-80UDs trialed by Pakistan - we can be sure of that.

Do you mind providing the source you’ve found this imaged attached to? If a primary source, it’d be incredibly useful for future T-80UD bug reports.

I’m incredibly confident that at least one Pakistani T-80UD has been fitted with the 6TD-II engine some time during its service or production.

Both secondary and primary sources either state or hint to so

It is fact that 2 different versions were trialed.
DU with T64 transmission suspension and DU-1 as the more standard T80UD. In service models were designated BE and BE-1 due to differences according to demands by PA

Sadly i dont have the source.
I got it from a russian comrade on discord.
@aDSD

Also i must mention that this blueprint is not 100% accurate to the final BE-1 design irl.
