War thunder should implement some sort of system that converts replays from old versions into usable ones. I know it might be a really difficult task especially for older versions of the game, but it is really annoying especially for content creators, when we go to fire up our replays, and they just so happen to be like a day old.
I’m not asking for a system that makes replays from 2015 or earlier playable or something, it would just be nice to see replays from maybe like 1 to 2 major updates ago be made usable again.
That being said, thank you to the devs for even making the replays a thing though, as it’s a really interesting mechanic that definitely has a lot of potential.

Before any new major Update drops, players get the announcement far enough ahead
of time to allow them the chance to save replays outside of the game.
There are several good/decent FREE apps that allow this, OBS, Handbrake and so on.
The trick is remembering in time and alotting enough time to get the replays saved
the way you want them. It takes a little time & effort.
I’m afraid there are just far too many replays for all the indivdual players for Gaijin
to ever give us any way or place to save any amount of “old” replays.

That is true. I unfortunately forgot about the update, and just now wanted to make a video with a pretty recent replay, only to discover it was taken a few days before the Heavy Cavalry major update.
Also, you said that there are several free tools that allow this, what do you mean by that? Do you just mean apps that allow recording the game?

Yes, you can Google search(or whatever your like to use: FREE recording software)
and you will get several “suggestions”.
OBS is one that is used a lot by many, especially here in WT I believe. I have it on my
system and it is not terrible difficult to use. As with most FREE apps, there are
usually “paid” versions that have more and better features I believe.
Just need to take some time, look/shop around for something that suits you and
practice with it a bit. You should be able to record/edit like you want in a short time.

I do have OBS studio installed on my PC, though I usually just record with medal, as it’s more convenient, and allows me to clip gameplay when I wasn’t already intending to before starting the game.
