Major Update "Hornet Sting" - Rumor Round-Up & Discussion (Part 3)

well, they tested it on the C but first fielded it on the E

Yes, F-18C does have HMD though I personally don’t find use in them for most situations.

I kind of wish they were limited to just aiming IR missiles, I think war thunder combat would be more fun if we had to use the search radar or ACM to lock enemy aircraft

TWS locking is objectively the best with ACM in 2nd for me personally, and HMD radar locking being the most difficult.

Does that title technically go to the F-4? I understand it was just a helmet mounted sight but wouldn’t it fall into the category of HMD?

It is probably why I’ve been mostly unaffected by the IRST issues plaguing the Typhoon at the moment, because in ASB, you need to make full use of the radar’s other modes to find a target first, you cant just rely upon the markers you have in ARB and use HMD to hard lock the radar onto that target

Would be really inetersting I think for gameplay, to test the removal of markers within ARB and so combat would much like you have in GRB, with only friendly markers visible

“am i chopped Arbi to you?”

Well thats where i would say that HMD and HMS are different. The first real hmd, was JHMCS in the early 2000’s.

I usually find TWS annoying to use, same with HMD, I still use ACM as my primary targeting mode, but I’d like it if everyone else had too as well

I hear there are some TWS improvements coming soon though according to the leaks.

I’d like an option to switch between cyclic targeting and precise targeting for my radar as well, as they’re both useful for different situations

Providing of course, that the TWS is working properly.

In the Typhoon the TWS feels extremely unreliable and many just use HMD mode to lock onto a target that they can see visually within gamemodes like ARB rather than fighting with the TWS.

(note, I have no such issues with the FRS1, FGR2, F3, FA2 or Gripen)

would absolutely support this

TWS I toggle if it goes somewhere I don’t want it to, then I just clock my standard “lock target” key that I use for all air RB matches to prioritize targets in my mind easier.
It’s so easy it’s what I use on Viggen C as well.

Would be a major boost to the performance of bombers and strike aircraft as well, because stealth becomes of value. Just perhaps have markers reappear in the last 5-10 or so minutes of the match to avoid people hiding

Really wouldn’t mind this. But I think you would see the rise in Friendly Fire raise dramatically.

No thanks

Yeah, when I do use TWS that is how I do it, I just prefer to STT lock people and guide missiles in when I can. I don’t really do much BVR though, so when I launch a missile most of the time it will already be pitbull, I don’t really save anything by using TWS

Friendly markers still visible though

It’d be perfect for an ARB EC mode, so that people who like the current ARB aren’t affected

I believe I have cracked the code as to why Mitsubishi F-2 and F/A-18A/B/C/D/E/F are so late.

Way back in the day, gaijin added the FJ-4B VMF-232. It was the first aircraft ingame with guided munitions, with the AGM-12 Bullpup. It proved that they were usable, and if they hadn’t been, oh well, it’s just an event vehicle. Just a silly little thing. Not many have it, and they have a novelty.

Recently, gaijin added the F-5A(G) with the AGM-119 Penguin, the first missile in the game that can take an IOG point on the map, fly to it, and then terminally home on a ground target.
It is IOG with IR terminal homing on moving targets. Lock On After Launch
IOG+IR LOAL
Functionally identical to GPS/GNSS+IR LOAL currently ingame

The F-18C (not 100% sure about F-18A), can utilize the AGM-84D/E/K Harpoon variant.

AGM-84E is GPS+IR LOAL

The F-2 can utilize the ASM-1 and ASM-2 antiship missiles.

ASM-1 is IOG+ARH LOAL
ASM-2 is IOG+IR LOAL
ASM-2B is GPS+IR LOAL

The F-18C and F-2A are the US and Japan’s ingame equivalents to Su-34 with KH-38MT and Rafale/Mirage 2000D RMV with AASM-Hammer (AASM-Hammer should be buffed to LOAL at some point, now that AGM-119 has the capability ingame)

I’m not sure how to feel about this, as a CAS main. These weapons will be less reliable than KH38MT, which just has a super long seeker range, and AGM-130A-12, my current favorite CAS weapon of what I have (I don’t have su-34 or mirage 2000d rmv or rafale)
(ignoring that you can only carry a couple. if i could carry a bunch, i would carry a bunch of AGM-130s, but you can’t so it’s not meta)

However, this is the best Japan is gonna get before the F-35. Lol. Lmao.

I think this is also a precursor to the GBU-53/B StormBreaker SDB II, which is a GPS+IR/millimeter wave radar terminal homing LOAL development of the GBU-39 SDB I we all know and love. It is a terrifying weapon. An air to ground AIM-120.

But yeah, F-18/F-2 were probably waiting on AGM-119 event vehicle.

This is a bad take but to fix bombers they need to drop the prop ones all .3 BR or make them way more durable

Which is why I’d leave friendly markers like there is in GRB. Otherwise yes, mass TKs like you have in ASB
