New gun from to rifled to smooth bore is not a side grade or minor
The main appeal to the A from a gameplay standpoint is the turret having a better ERA layout over something like the T-72B3 other than that and the CITV it will play relatively the same.
The BVM will still be the better tank on the virtue of it having higher mobility on top of being decently protected and having good gun handling
It will be slightly heavier T72B3M with better turret protection (especially gun breach, though its still not enough to protect it from APDSFS, but theres also no turret roof weakspot) and a bonus of nice commander sights with 3rd gen thermal and nice zooms (T-72B3M is stuck with static 8x zoom which isnt even stabilised)

The BVMs armor is more than adequate and like I said already it’s mobility on top of having decent armor still makes it better than the 90M

There aren’t that many things that DM53 can pen that L27A1 couldn’t pen already. For the LEP.
T-90M pays for the better armor with a heavy mobility reduction compared to the BVM.
The SEPv2 gets a bunch of mostly useless extra armor at the price of more weight and worse mobility.

The BVM is only good because Kontakt 5 is somewhat overperforming and because of the damage model

BVM has Relikt, which you cant claim underperforms or overperforms because we dont even know all materials used, etc. We only know supposedly how it works.
Why not DM63 or DM73
iirc it’s not just the ERA basically nearly every T series tank is overperforming in armour protection from something like between 50-150mm

didn’t footage of the T-90M on the battlefield reveal it had the usual slow reverse speed of all the other russian MBT’s?
DM63 pens the same as DM53 and I’m not sure if there is enough information available to fully fill out the calculation for DM73.

Not really, some even have online tests on them showing their armour irl is just same in game, for example T-80U can be penetrated by M829A2 irl like it can be in game.
