History:

The Machitis class or Osprey HSY-56A class is a class of patrol boats serving in the Greek navy. Built by Hellenic shipyards, these boats are based on the Danish designed Osprey 55 class of patrol boats and currently are amongst the most modern of patrol boats in the Hellenic navy. The main role of these boats is to patrol and safeguard the Greek waters in areas like the Aegean Islands and prevent illegal incursions and to control the migran flow in the area as part of an agreement between Türkiye and Greece in 2016.

Among these boats, HS Machitis (Greek for soldier) was the first of the 4 boats to be laid down and completed and the second boat in the Hellenic navy to carry the name after the Algerine class vessel commissioned. The lead boat was commissioned on the 29th of October 2003

As part of the Hellenic navy modernisations, Machitis alongside her 3 sister ships and had/will be fitted with Typhoon MLS-ER launchers for Spike NLOS missiles. Machitis already received the missiles, replacing it’s 40mm gun.

HS Machitis has had a peaceful and tame career. She is part of the NATO Maritime group 2 along with Italian, Canadian, German and Turkish vessels. The group is responsible for tracking Russian submarines to counter the naval presence at Tartus, Syria. The group would also take part in exercises such as Dynamic Manta 2020.

As of writing, HS Machitis is still in active service.
