History.
The Macchi M.C.200 “Saetta” was a single-engine fighter aircraft developed by the Italian aeronautical company Aeronautica Macchi during the second half of the 1930s. It made its first flight in late December 1937, and entered the line just over a year later. Over time this aircraft, despite its good characteristics, began to become gradually more obsolete given the advance of the Allied aircraft, and Breda decided to build a single experimental example to improve its characteristics. The aircraft was re-engined with a Piaggio engine and there were some modifications in the engine area. The prototype took the skies the 11th April 1942 from Milano-Bresso, piloted by pilot Luigi Acerbi. The flying test showed promising results, with a top speed of 535 km/h, but problems arose due to the weight and the weight/power ratio, which was somewhat disappointing even for the creator of the plane’s re-engine. Due to this, there were no subsequent modifications to the devices still in use and this single example was scrapped to save what could be saved.
Armaments and propulsion.
Like all Italian fighter planes of the time, the plane was equipped with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns placed in the nose with 370 rounds per gun.
The aircraft was powered by a Piaggio P.XIX RC.45 engine, an engine capable of reaching 1,160 HP of power and pushing the aircraft up to a maximum speed of 535 km/h.
