Lublin class Minelayer/Landing ships: Masters of multitasking

History :
The Lublin class minelayer-landing ships were designed in the 1970s/1980s for transporting troops/equipment, conducting landings and setting defensive minefields. Originally 12 were planned but only 5 were built due to finical difficulties. Between 1987 and 1991 all 5 ships were complete in Northern Shipyard, Gdansk. Each ship was named after cities of the Piast Dynasty.

The Lublin class has been quite prevelent in military exercises. ORP Ponzan took part in Strong resolve 2002, Blue game 2003, BALTOPS 2004, BALTOPS 2005 and Anakonda 2006, the past one where it assumed the role flagship of the 8th flotilla.

On the 12th of October 2007, ORP Lublin became on honorary citizen of Lublin.

In 2012, 2 Lubin class ships took part in that year’s BALTOPS exercise alongside 25 other ships (of various classes and roles) and simulated the first allied landing on Lithuania.

ORP Gniezno took part in the exercise Spring Storm in 2019

In 2025, ORP Turun helped transfer a Polish Himars and other trucks+high mobility vehicles to take part in the Swift Response NATO exercise in Finland.

On February 18th 2026, ORP Ponzan went to PGZ Stocznia Wojenna for scheduled maintenance
