hello, is there a way to make the camera position lower when driving tanks? i mostly play full real battles, and the camera is floating several feet above the commander hatch. i realize this is for gameplay reasons, but its very unrealistic and immersion breaking.
can i just lower the position of my head to about hatch level for the sake of immersion?
you’re not turned out the full way during combat, even if this were the case, the camera is set up does not even remotely take into effect human visual elements. a sherman is a good example, i’ve stood in the commander position of two different shermans now. and the way your eye focuses on the area around you, the turret is always in your peripheral. something a static camera can’t account for.
the fact you’re basically levitating magically above your vehicle makes it feel like you’re playing with a remote control tank, not a member of the crew.
i also find this type of argument very “war thunder” as i’m simply asking if i, personally, can lower the camera. i realize its set very high for gameplay reasons, and people would be very upset if the game became more realistic in this regard. but i am willing to sacrifice my view of the game world for a greater sense of immersion
one video of an open turret tank destroyer providing long-range fire support alongside infantry in a second line position does not somehow prove that tanks in direct combat have the commander standing fully exposed???
i’m not even saying it never happened, sure. there are tons of situations where a commander would stand, or even sit on the cupola. and its going to vary between vehicles. but certainly not when they are receiving fire. so to think that the camera position in war thunder is anywhere near “realistic” is showing a lack of basic common sense.
even on the topic of video games, look at the tank simulators that exist out there. most of them let you control how exposed you are as the commander. letting you choose different positions depending on the combat situation.
Personally, i have seen several videos with commanders being WAY to exposed for the situation, videos that i won’t link here as it wouldn’t be appropriate to do so.
I’m not in any way saying that it’s smart, standard procedure or something that happens often, but it happens and since the player controls the commander and chooses when said commander use the binoculars it would then be up to the player to chose in what situation they want to do that.
I personally think they should add a mechanic such that the commander is actually physically exposed while using the binoculars to hinder players from standing behind a rock/hill completely out of harms way to spot enemies.
Here is a suggestion for such a mechanic:
(Commander pops up when using binoculars)
You can make a suggestion for adding a mechanic that lets the player control the height of the crew using the binoculars and if enough players show interest then the Suggestion Moderators forward it to the developers (i think that’s how it works at least) for consideration. It would honestly be a good mechanic to have as it would let players be able to look above (or below) some of the equipment on the roof that is otherwise currently in the way (like some .50cal guns, periscopes and such).
every suggestion i’ve made has been shot down, i just don’t think the community that plays this game is looking for “immersion.” which is a shame. something as simple as “the ability to turn off pintle mounted machineguns” has been shot down atleast 6 times over the years. which is crazy to me.
I’ve never asked for any of these things be mandatory. again, i know the reason we have magically rotating turret-roof machineguns crewed by ghosts is for gameplay reasons. but i don’t think anything breaks my immersion more than seeing them traverse via magic.
something as basic as “let me remove them” or simply “let me toggle them off” for the sake of immersion is blasphemy in these forums. and it makes me avoid posting here.
You can always send a private message to a Suggestion Moderator and ask why the suggestion was turned down.
I think you can, if you key bind the three settings “select primary- secondary- weaponry/machineguns” you can switch between controlling all, controlling only main gun and controlling only machinegun.
yes but then you’re only firing one weapon at a time, and i still need my coaxial gun. or any secondary guns my vehicle might have. its also frustrating because a lot of the vehicles never used to have AA guns, like the panther ant tiger. which very rarely had them equipped. but obviously, its a gameplay thing with little thought given to historical accuracy.
this is such a baffling thing to say, and its actually a prime example of why so few people play the more “”““realistic””“” game modes.
in any simulator that exists on earth, if you ask the community for help on a topic, they help you. and if you ask or suggest something about the realism, you can have a conversation of realism vs. gameplay.
war thunder is the only game i’ve ever played where asking the most basic, simple question about a feature that LITERALLY every tank simulator ever made has featured, will just get people telling you “go play something else”
i don’t want to play something else, i want THIS game to improve and become better. you should want that too. why are you people so resistant to change???
again, this is a feature LITERALLY every tank simulator i’ve ever played features. even other tank games in general, like red orchestra lets you control how high you stand from the commanders position.
maybe YOU should go play a different game, learn the basic features that are common to the genre, then come back to war thunder and see how archaic and cartoonish it feels.
What is baffling about it? If you want infantry-stylistic aspects of an armored shooter game, play Enlisted where there’s infantry and armor.
And you’ve been helped? War Thunder isn’t the game for infantry-based interactions. If you want that, Gaijin made Enlisted for a reason.
What tank simulator has it? The only one that can come to mind is IL-2, and even then that’s simulator driven instead of a stylized arcade game.
Once again, if you want down-to-earth tank interactions with infantry, there’s Enlisted… Where you can do this.
What would “improve” or “become better” about the game by making the commander stick out the hatch? Better yet, you’re arguing that some vehicles’ defenses should be LESS usable.
Nothing’s wrong about the commander placement, unless you want to focus on the Abrams having its close-in camera position over the loader hatch, not the commander.
Then again… This is a 3rd person vehicle-based arcade shooter. Small meticulous knit-picky details that exist in the exact scope you’re complaining about are already present in games designed for what you’re looking for. There’s a VERY big reason why Gaijin made Enlisted, and that’s to appease to players like you… Yet you still want War Thunder to change for the worse.
Red Orchestra is an infantry shooter??? The hell are you talking about?
I do…? I have about 300 hours in Enlisted.
I know exactly how “archaic and cartoonish” it is, then again I understand that other games do different things better and I’m playing an arcade shooter.
