Linux Stuttering/FPS bug

Hi all,

First off I want to apologize for the video resolution. I don’t record my screen ever and I can’t force this bug to occur. So when I got a chance to clip it sadly the video got chopped… I will still use it as you can see the issue still.

I am running WT on Linux, and my distro of choice is Fedora workstation 42 with gnome. I have an AMD GPU and the most up to date mesa open source drivers.

I have been seeing this for awhile now and don’t know if I see much talk about it. This stuttering/fps drop bug has been happening to me non stop for months now and the only thing I have found that resolves it temporarily is a client restart. A few things I have tried to resolve the issue: uninstalled the game, uninstalled steam, updated my drivers, a complete OS reinstall and nonetheless this issue always comes back.

Is this a bug that has already been reported? Is there a Gaijin response or acknowledgment? Or has anyone come across a fix for this? It really sucks and whenever it happens I just want to get off for the day.

Also I have no issue running this game at a consistent 144fps on High settings.
PC specs:
GPU: 7600XT
CPU: 12700k
SSD: 1tb NVME
RAM: 32gb
Monitor: 2560x1440

I have also attached a clip of how smooth the game runs after a client restart.

I don’t know what causes this, but all of a sudden the game will drop in FPS and start stuttering and after restarting the game it goes away temporarily.

Also attaching a clip of me in game when this bug happened.

Again my apologies about the resolution. I got all three of these in succession and I only saw them after closing the game to look at my clips for the bug report.

Have you tried downscalling the resolution to 1920x1080p? I believe you won’t find much graphical issues, or perhaps, using the Steam-Linux support to launch games? Or even considering a older version of your OS, I really couldn’t notice much stuttering or frame losses, maybe is due to my monitor’s capped 60 Hz and I believe the footage has been taken in more than that, it’s a issue on my part,

War Thunder’s ‘Hornet’s Sting’ Major update was released in 18th of March of 2025 and Fedora 42 at 15th of April of 2025, and I can assume that maybe a support and performance issue has been grown since then, we’re expecting an update soon so maybe this issue can be solved with the future update. For further reading or even more information I highly recommend you reaching out directly Fedora’s Forum for performance issues, I believe you can find a proper answer there:

Nonsense talk

War Thunder’s Linux support yet existant is poorly implemented and I’m sure this needs better improvements, have you considered other OSs like Pop!_OS or even Windows, at start I was considering Pop!_OS due to the support within gaming but I was concerned of major issues like these while using layers of tools just to make a Windows ‘exclusive’ game work in Linux by using tools like Whine and Proton, so in the end I considered Windows for the sake of my sanity, lol.

Is not doubt that War Thunder itself has huge performance issues not only on Linux but Windows aswell, I’m sure I have more than enough machine but this don’t exclude myself to encounter some issues like images flashing or suddlenly frames losses, I restricted myself to a custom High quality graphical settings, yet having an average of ~260 frames-per-second, some times the number may rise or fall depending on the map and situation I’m facing like huge effects on screen, map loading and such things.

However, before any drastic changes on your device, try to download War Thunder directly from their website at War Thunder — Realistic Military Vehicles Online Combat Game for PC, Xbox and PlayStation. Play for Free;

From there you should download a .tar file if I’m not wrong, but apart of what I said previously until now, I can’t help any further, I’m not exactly the best person to ask about how to download games in Linux, specially in .tar, I hope these information may help you.

Hello @Fry0000, @Renamed67357,

Do you have the Steam overlay disabled? If so could you please enable it and see if you still get the performance issue?

Apemax,

Steam overlay was turned off at some point. I turned this back on and have not seen this issue today so far.

Right, Thats good to hear, This is a issue with the Steam Overlay with Vulkan games when it is disabled. It should be fixed in the Steam Client Beta so hopefully the next stable release will include the fix:
