Let's talk about the Su-27SM and the R-77s

I’m playing in sim, and I have to say the Su-27SM and R-77 combo is really terrible. It can’t see anything even right in front of its nose, and the radar is literally asleep. If it even manages to lock onto something, the R-77s can’t even get into launch range, while every other missile gets fired before you, forcing you into defense. The enemy chases you, and you can only run because the moment you try to turn around, there’s another missile ready to kiss your aircraft goodbye. The only way to get kills is through ambushes or luck in a clean 1v1 without interference, but you have to get into R-73 range, use the mountains, and stay hidden. If you’re on a map like Sinai, you’re basically AIM-120 fodder.
The situation seems to be slightly better in ARB, but in sim mode you really feel this performance gap compared to counterparts like the EF2k, Rafale, F-18, F-15, and F-16

I take 2 r27er for long range jousts, r77 just doesn’t have the range. The obvious problem is you lose if you dont launch first and well before.

There is some goofy stuff you can do with relocking but im not sure how viable that is in sim.

Nah. Quite easy to dodge them. Try to play passive until you get closer. The the WEZ of the AMRAAM (3 km) at 7 or higher you can enter a notch or just drag the missile into the ground.

Problem is you get put on the defensive, and if its not a tws random launch and you are getting focused you’ll get ran down like a dog.

If hes playing sim its most likely the latter since its probably a 1v1 situation.

Yeah, but those missiles force you to maintain the lock, so you can’t really go on the defensive—at best, you can stay perpendicular. It’s a compromise, but not a very good one. Also, you have to manage to lock onto him before he locks onto you, and as I said, that’s often really difficult. The TWS struggles seriously to keep a target on radar in soft lock, and I have to use the SRC PD, which reveals to the enemy that I’m locking them

Sim? yea. It sim it would be pretty shit. In ARB is ok afaik

How is the irst? I play rb so i dont bother with it much. Couldnt you find them at say 40-50km in tws switch to an irst lock then switch to a pd lock at 25-30km or whatever you intend to shoot at?

I guess bad weather would be an issue though.

How is src pd going to let them know before tws? Arent you only locking them up when you fire or is tws just much better for a sim enviroment? Its easy to visualize pd search area in rb with tilt search area being displayed on screen I guess not so much in sim unless you get those lines too.
