Less then Lethal Weapons Infantry Discussion - A Name Provided By My Legal Team & HR

Less then Lethal Weapons

With infantry mode continuing to develop, I wanted to open up a discussion around the potential role of less-than-lethal (non-lethal) equipment and how it could fit into gameplay.

This isn’t about replacing standard weapons, but adding another layer of tactical options especially for suppression, area denial, and squad coordination.

Concept Overview
Less-than-lethal tools could give players new ways to control engagements without relying purely on damage. Instead of eliminating enemies outright, these tools would focus on disorientation, visibility reduction, and temporary debuffs. But if you stand in riot gas without a gas mask for to long you will be sent back to the hanger.

Possible Equipment Types

  • Tear Gas / Smoke Agents
    • Creates a cloud that reduces visibility and causes effects like blurred vision or slower movement
    • Could be used to flush enemies out of cover or block key routes
  • Flashbangs (Stun Grenades)
    • Temporarily blinds and deafens players caught in the blast
    • Strong for breaching buildings or pushing defended positions
  • Sound Devices / Concussion Devices
    • Focus more on disorientation rather than full blindness
    • Could interfere with audio cues (footsteps, gunfire direction)
  • Irritant or Suppression Tools
    • Equipment that doesn’t damage but forces players to reposition or retreat

Implementation Through Effects (Balance Focus)

  • Effects should be temporary and avoid hard disables (no long “you can’t play” moments)
  • Strongest impact comes from positioning and timing, not spam
  • Could include counters like:
    • Gas masks or reduced-effect gear
    • Cooldowns or limited carry capacity
  • Visual/audio effects should be impactful but not frustrating or excessive

Discussion Points

  • Do you think less-than-lethal tools would add meaningful gameplay, or just clutter?
  • Should they be widely available or limited to certain roles/classes?
  • How strong should effects like flash or gas actually be?
  • What kind of counters would be necessary for balance?

Curious to hear how people think this could fit into infantry mode especially in terms of realism vs gameplay balance. Overall this could have the ability to open of special security lines in the game and open new types of equipment AKA police, SWAT, and Anti-Terror style organizations.

sry, im acturally against these

  1. milsim and army rarely cope with these, its more like a police or special force thing
  2. hard to balence, especially when may people crowded in a single map, too much flash and smoke stuff will smash my computer and the server

Better add extra-lethal weapons such as thermobaric grenades, flamethrower grenade launchers and flamethrowers, also phosphor grenades :D

I’m sort of pushing the concept of special police and anti-terror equipment they can push around dug in players and Gaijin like unique ways of game play. 80 percent of the player base may play infantry in the expected way then there will be the ones doing things a little differently to keep you on your toes.

There is a USA vehicle that fits this perfectly The Rook Swat lifter.

Only Stun grenades should be added.

Volumetric gas grenades. To clear rooms and houses.

Tear gas but overall I do see police equipment as viable for infantry mode as there are lots of strange equipment out there.

The Rook

I dont think it really fits the theme.

WARthunder is more about war and in war, why throw a flashbang(which will still leave a threat) when you could do a much better job with a frag grenade.

allows space for maneuver its still something I will write a suggestion for as someone will find utility with it. One reason I started this post was thinking about a special Robot called the Guardium which has less then lethal Launchers some of that is depending of what is loaded. Some of the rounds the air guns fire are metal balls so they can harm you get close range. The vehicle also has MGs so it would work in infantry but the air guns can add to your fire power.
