Leopard 2A8 – Photographic Evidence of MUSS-Derived Protection System Integration (ODAEON)

Issue: Missing Soft-Kill Protection Capabilities on the German Leopard 2A8

The German Leopard 2A8 currently lacks a laser warning system and MUSS-derived soft-kill protection capabilities in War Thunder.

Publicly available photographic and technical evidence indicates that such systems have already been physically installed on Leopard 2A8 demonstrator configurations.

  1. Photographic Evidence – Eurosatory 2026

The Leopard 2A8 displayed at Eurosatory 2026 featured additional protection equipment, including a roof-mounted sensor and a soft-kill protection system associated with ODAEON, a technology derived from MUSS.

Additional photographs:

The Defence Network report explicitly identifies the additional soft-kill protection equipment and roof-mounted sensor as differences between the 2024 and 2026 exhibition configurations.

These photographs provide evidence of a physical installation on the Leopard 2A8 platform rather than merely a theoretical proposal.

  1. Officially Commissioned Development and Integration

According to German defence reporting, Hensoldt was commissioned by the Bundeswehr’s procurement agency, BAAINBw, to develop the ODAEON optical detection system.

The broader Leopard 2 modernization studies also included the integration of an extended Multifunctional Self-Protection System (MUSS) by KNDS Deutschland.

This establishes that the development and integration of MUSS-derived protection technology on the Leopard 2 is part of an officially commissioned programme.
