Leopard 2A8 — Missing ODAEON / MUSS-Based Soft-Kill Protection System

Description

The German Leopard 2A8 currently lacks the ODAEON / MUSS-based protection capabilities demonstrated and developed for the Leopard 2 platform.

There is substantial evidence that these systems are not merely speculative proposals. The German Bundeswehr has already funded their development, commissioned work related to their integration into the Leopard 2, and an ODAEON-equipped Leopard 2A8 demonstrator has been publicly presented.

Ignoring this evidence while representing the vehicle as a modern Leopard 2A8 configuration requires a clear technical justification.

Evidence 1 — Official Bundeswehr Development Contract for ODAEON

On February 17, 2025, HENSOLDT announced that it had received a €17.6 million development contract from the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw).

The contract concerns the development of ODAEON, an advanced optical detection system based on technology from the MUSS Jammer Head 2.

The development program aims to achieve Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL 6), with a demonstrator scheduled for evaluation by the Bundeswehr.

This is not an independently funded manufacturer’s concept. It is an officially commissioned development program financed by the German armed forces.

Evidence 2 — Bundeswehr-Commissioned MUSS Integration Work for Leopard 2

According to German defence publication hartpunkt, BAAINBw also commissioned KNDS Deutschland to investigate the integration of an expanded Multifunctional Self-Protection System (MUSS) into the Leopard 2 main battle tank.

This establishes a direct connection between:

  • The German Bundeswehr
  • KNDS Deutschland
  • The Leopard 2 platform
  • MUSS-based self-protection technology

Therefore, describing MUSS integration into the Leopard 2 as purely hypothetical would be misleading.

Evidence 3 — Leopard 2A8 Demonstrator Equipped with ODAEON-Related Equipment

A Leopard 2A8 demonstrator presented at Eurosatory 2026 reportedly featured ODAEON-related equipment.

This is particularly important because the discussion is no longer limited to theoretical compatibility or preliminary development contracts.

The technology has been associated with a physical Leopard 2A8 demonstrator.

Although a demonstrator does not automatically establish the final configuration of every production vehicle, it provides concrete evidence that ODAEON-related equipment has been demonstrated on the Leopard 2A8 platform.

This evidence should not be dismissed without examining the actual demonstrator configuration.

Evidence 4 — Inconsistency in the Representation of the German Leopard 2A8

The German Leopard 2A8 is represented with its Trophy hard-kill active protection system.

However, its additional German-developed optical detection and soft-kill protection capabilities are not represented.

The existence of a Bundeswehr-funded ODAEON development contract, KNDS involvement in MUSS integration work, and an ODAEON-related Leopard 2A8 demonstrator raises legitimate questions about the completeness of the current vehicle model.

A lack of publicly available confirmation of series-production installation is not the same as evidence that the system is absent from every Leopard 2A8 configuration.

If the in-game vehicle is intended to represent a specific production configuration, that configuration should be clearly identified and its equipment accurately documented.

Being in development doesn’t mean it’s finished, doesn’t mean that it is finished with integration and doesn’t mean it’s in service yet. You will have to prove that without speculating, without making assumptions and only using reliable sources.

Trophy APS is integrated, has been mounted and has been seen on the 2A8 delivered to both Norway and Germanys armed forces:
