Description: It was in September 2019, during the Teknofest event in Turkey, when the famous drone manufacturer Baykar unveiled for the first time a new male-class drone, the Akinci. It was presented as a new and capable machine, designated to be a multirole platform able to fulfill many tasks. After being presented to the pulic in September, it was subjected to various engine trials, where the two Ukrainian-made AI-450Cs were tested under various conditions, and shortly after, in December, it rose to the skies for the first time. From 2020 to 2021, the prototype accomplished other flight tests, conducted the first live firing with Turkish national air-to-ground missiles, and was also joined by two other prototypes. The first serial unit also came shortly after, being part of an initial batch of 3 units for the Turkish armed forces, which was delivered on the 29th of August, 2021. Since then, more than 60 drones have been produced for various customers in the Middle East and African regions, with more in sight for the future. On March 6, 2025, the Italian defense giant Leonardo signed an MOU (memorandum of understanding) with Baykar aimed at the creation of a new joint venture for the development and production of various classes of drones, from small UAVs to large MALE and adjuncts. The joint venture’s first goal was to produce an Akinci Male drone equipped with Italian sensors and systems from Leonardo. Among the new systems implemented on the already existing Akinci, a total of 4 radars will be available: the Gabbiano T-80UL, the Seaspray 7500 Osprey 55/30, and the Grifo-E, along with the new LEOSS-T FLIR, Brite Storm jammer, Skyward IRST, Ulisses ASW system, a new radio, and new IFF. The first prototype was showcased recently at the Paris Le Bourget Air Show on 16 June 2025, along with all its available payload. Serial production will probably commence next year, even though neither a timeline nor interested customers were revealed.
