Kondor II: Birdcatcher

Meet the Kondor II minesweeper, which is equipped with rapid-firing anti-aircraft guns and a Strela-2M air defense missile launcher! This one’s an interesting addition to the German Coastal fleet research tree, coming soon in the next major update.

Kondor II: A Minesweeper for Germany at Rank IV

Features:

  • 3 x twin 25 mm machine guns.
  • Strela-2M SAM.
  • Low top speed.
Vehicle History

Project 89 minesweepers have been built in the GDR since the late 60s, and their NATO classification was Kondor. Project 89 ships underwent four modernization programs, the latest and most advanced of which was designated 89.2 UR2 or Kondor II. These included the installation of modern sonar and radar equipment, as well as the Strela-2M anti-aircraft missile system in the FASTA launcher. These ships could operate as part of distant sea and ocean formations and were placed in service with the German Navy until 1995. After decommissioning, some of the Kondor II ships were sold to other countries, including Indonesia, Uruguay and Latvia.

Meet the Kondor II

The German Kondor II is a representative of a rare class of SAM carriers in the game. Today we’ll be taking a look at this interesting ship coming to Germany’s Coastal fleet tree. Let’s dive in!

Coastal fleet ships are usually smaller, but the Kondor II is a fairy large ship, armed with three twin mounts with 25 mm autocannons and a FASTA 4M2 launcher with Strela-2M anti-aircraft missiles. This ship also has a radar to detect air targets too, and a crew of 29 people.

Interesting: Three Kondor series ships purchased by the Maltese Government were sunk in the most picturesque of places on the island’s coast and are used as tourist spots for divers.

Its length is more than 50 meters and its maximum speed is just 18.5 knots (34 km/h), meaning the Kondor II is primarily a backline fighter. Well hidden behind islands and low cliffs, make sure to use the Kondor II as your team’s main aircraft cover at long distances. This ship can also be used is for artillery ambushes at capture points, where the Kondor II can use its rapid-firing 25 mm cannons!

This unusual anti-aircraft ship is coming to the game in the next major update at rank IV of the German Coastal fleet tree. Until then, keep an eye on our website for more dev blogs that we’re currently cooking!

No need to cook for long, i like my devblogs extremely rare!

Finally, we got some manpads. But waht about the manpads on ussr ships?

This is cool, but this strela system is going to be completely useless, because at the BR this will be there will only be propeller aircraft that this will be unable to lock. Always nice to see new naval stuff though.

heat seekers are able to track prop planes ingame, and also irl, for example the stinger of the wiesel can track until 150°C low signitures irl

are those small torpedos at the back guided?, seem way to much to be just decoration
Edit those are sonar buoy or stuff to let in water to detect or destroy mines

IIRC the Strela recently got the ability to lock on by optical contrast, which means you can lock even very cold targets at extreme ranges if the weather is clear.

Besides, all-aspect missiles like Strela have highly sensitive seeker heads that can see and lock on to the airframe itself (not just exhaust plume)

It will work against props, and it will be basically undefeatable without flares.

Finally a missile boat for Germany.

I mean, cool, but looks completely useless to me.

I am not sure about Arcade, but in Realistic and EC, the aircraft are very minor threat.

Could this be the sign of some design changes to Naval, to make aircraft more viable?

soon… i hope

day after day i’m starting to value my decision to keep the a-1h, only shame is that i don’t have American ships, only British

thats a boat alright

Coastal… so you get to take on destroyers and cruisers using a 25mm???
And your WW2 bomber is now going to be blown out of the sky with an AA missile???

Good thing naval was already dead, what a mess this is.

even more fun that this is probably gonna be at the end of the coastal tree, which is surrounded by the worst grind in the history of the game.

good thing no nation in the game has an absurdly broken coastal ship or a missile ship in the bluewater tree! /s

I hope Gaijin has prepared another Devblog today, as I really can’t muster any interest in naval fleets.

Well, here’s hoping other nations get SAMs at some point

lets hope it, or it ends up like with hull aiming, which not sweden did get first but germany

20G all aspect missile at what, 4.7 or something? Coastal really is a mess.

IMO the naval tech tree should progress the same way that ground and air trees do: post war vessels ought to come after WW2 ones, and sit at a corresponding higher tier and BR so that only the very best WW2 vehicles can face the earliest post-war ones.

I will admit, balancing WW2 battleship vs. a relatively small cold war boat can be a challenge. Alternatively, I propose that WW2 and Post-War shouldn’t face each other at all. Have a cut off line somewhere once ships start carrying missiles.

If battles where modern aircraft with anti-ship missiles can face off against player vessels will ever become a thing, then post war vessels need their BRs raised to reflect their modernity.
