Its was purely designed for one very specific scenario: Long range interception of bombers / strike aircraft / patrol aircraft over the North Sea or Atlantic.
Limited planes like this, which are not fitting the Air RB meta of beeing good furball fighters, should have been introduced much earlier, before things like F-16 etc were a thing.
For now, all they might do is to make life a bit easier by removing these contrails, which give away the position of missile turcks too easily.
Yeah. It would have been a really fun and competitive jet if it was added at the end of 2021 when its main opponenent would have been things like late F4s and Mig-23s. At minimum it should have come at the same time or just before the F-14A
When are you getting in a turn fight at sub 400Kph in the F.3? Should it be fixed? Ofcourse, no objections there. But realistically you’re not going to be rate fighting at below 400Kph in the Tornado nor should you.
Somehow every Air RB match ends in a tight turnfight, everyone vs everyone…chaotic and unforgiving too all planes which don’t fit this meta. Game mechanic somehow funnels everyone together. Objectives are clustered and high alt tactics have softcap, cause of these contrails.
So everyone stays very low (no incentive to climb, just dangerous and gives away your position) and if you somehow want to get RP or SL, you need to be part of the furball. Radar missiles can’t be used low alt. IR missiles without ECCM are usually useless as well (flares everyhwere). So…believe it or not…even at max BR…at the current game meta…its just the gun which gives you ze kills. In a Tornado as well as in a F-16.
New ECCM’ed IR missiles aside, they’re a new factor only few jets have access to.
ARB was designed for Spitfires vs Bf109s. Gun dogfights. It hasnt been updated since. Modern aircraft, especially the interceptors, that dont excel in dogfights, are going to be DOA in that form of combat. Its why I havent touched ARB outside of the rare match in the Gr7 in the better part of 2 years. Britain has no dogfighter above about BR 9.7, the last that comes to mind is the Hunter, but All aspects missile and no CMs make that a very unfun aircraft these days.
Its not the only one, A lot of Strike Aircraft dont for some reason. I recently went back and spaded the Jaguar Gr1. That was brutal, No starting weapons at all. Gun fighting at 9.7 in a striker was not fun
Theres a reason why F-5’s and F-16’s are so plain op. Its mostly the match rules and map design which make them great. Its especially obvious for the F-5’s, they’re not even mach two jets and have no great missile either…but beeing small and maneuverable, energy conserving and rather low engine temperatur…this makes them often better than jets which are far more modern / higher BRed.
