A system concept study was conducted from July 1995 to December 1997 to establish the concept of a new domestic tank, and from November 1998 to December 2002, exploratory development was conducted to develop and technically verify core technologies and components. Then, in June 2003, full-scale system development began, and four years later, on March 2, 2007, the prototype XK-2 was unveiled. From February to September 2007, the prototype XK-2 underwent developer test evaluation and operational test evaluation, and from November 2007, the
prototype was delivered to the Republic of Korea Army for field operation test until September 2008, and in December 2008, the defense specification for the tank was completed, and mass production and fielding began in July 2014.
