JSDF Infantry General

With infantry around the corner I thought I’d create a hypothetical future tech tree we could see in game. It’s nowhere close to complete and I’ll try to add more info on each weapon as I have time.

I tried to keep things clean by not having an individual icon for changes in things like scopes or grenade launchers. For example the Type 64 DMR starts with an M1D scope, but has been seen with modern optics and can even mount a scope with thermals and a laser range finder.

This scope can be mounted on everything from the Type 64, M24, G28, Type 89, Type 20, so its not really unique and it can be assumed that high rank versions of any of those rifles can be created by adding this scope.

I only included distinct variants for special attachments for specialized equipment like the SMASH 3000 or ACIES equipment.

Things left off the list:

  • Pistols
  • Evaluated RPG-7

There isn’t much info on it past a few secondary source mentions.

  • Captured North Korean Weapons from Amami-Oshima

I might add the Type 82 LMG in the future as it is a unique addition, but unlike other evaluation rifles included in the tree, this was never planned to be adopted and merely evaluated to gauge performance.

  • Purely law enforcement weapons

I feel like if I include anything law enforcement it really becomes muddied with even more foreign designs. Purely going off of the weapons used by the various JSDF branches, it gives a good balance while keeping the identity of the tree.

  • Some of the other AR-18/Type 89 prototypes

Again, there isn’t a lot of info on a lot of these, but I want to find more info on the T-12 carbine

Type 64 ❤️

I felt, the GATE fans enter the fourm

Adding on new info. The T-12 carbine prototype is actually an AR-18S, but appears to be a unique variant probably built in house by Howa.

The M24 SWS used by Japan also seems to be the M24A2 variant specifically

Another development I want to add on is the XA-20 as a part of the KIST Type A program.

The KIST Type A was built as a collaboration between Korean Institute of Science & Technology and Japan Special Technical Research Laboratory to help kickstart Korea’s domestic arms manufacturing with Masanori Tani at the head of the project.

The JSTRL would assist KIST with building 10 prototypes each of a machine gun and special rifle.

The first two models of the ten was the KIST Type A which was a close copy of the Type 62 to lay the foundation for production techniques.

However later on in the program as manufacturing techniques matured, the design of the machine gun changed to help with design practices instead.

That is where the XA-20 comes in.

It’s a further development of the KIST Type A and would eventually further evolve into the K3 LMG. As its part of the program of the KIST/JSTRL development program, I feel like the XA-20 would have much more of an impact as a unique weapon over “slightly different Type 62”.

Here’s a video on both LMGs as well.

I still want to find more info on the “special rifle” that was also part of the program, but this whole thing is kept under some very tight wraps for obvious reasons with info only coming out in 2022. I have a feeling it might be the XB series of rifles as the KIST/JSTRL agreement was signed in 1971 which was the same year that development began on the XB series, but there is no confirmation.
