It’s incredible how it’s possible to see a drone 14 km away but not aircraft

Have you considered how spotting works in whatever mode you talk about?
Not sure how this relates to the topic, but I have had a related experience to the thread in Simulator mode. When a plane was pretty far out (I’m not sure just how far out it was) I was able to see a little dot moving across my screen, however once I zoomed in my camera into the same spot as the dot it disappeared. When I zoomed out, the plane re-rendered in or something, and the dot was back. The continued until I got within about 6 kilometers and they finally showed up when I zoomed in as well. This also isn’t the first time I have had this happen, it has happened to me in GRB as well.

It happens a lot and I hate it. My maxed out air crew can’t see a plane 10km out but a drone a 10th of the size stands out across the whole map
